The decade of the 50s and the 60s clearly belonged to Johnny Walker. From 1951 to 1969, JW worked in 142 films – an average of 6 films per year. This means, every 2 months a JW film was released. This is a very high average, which I feel many leading stars also must have found difficult to achieve for successive years. There must be very few to get this number. In the year 1955 alone his 17 films were running at a time in theatres ! In the period 1970 to 1989 he did only 42 films, which averages to almost just 2 films a year.

“Black Cat”(1959) was directed by N A Ansari. The movie had Balraj Sahni, Minu Mumtaz, N A Ansari, Johnny Walker, Mumtaz Begum, Shammi, Hari Shivdasani, Tun Tun etc in it. From the comments of our readers in earlier songs of this movie, it is known that it was a chor police movie where Balraj Sahni is the police and he is in love with Minu Mumtaz. It turns out that Minu Mumtaz’s brother, N A Ansari is the boss of a smuggling gang. His gang is named after his pet- a black cat.

Comedians were given due importance in old time films in general and in the Golden Era in particular. This fact can be noticed in movies produced from late 40s to late 60s.

Good, quality comedians entered films and succeeded. Roles were created and written for them and songs were filmed on them. A variety of comedy was offered to the audience. Slapstick comedy, situational comedy, farce, physical comedy and comedy of events- all these were lapped up by the public. Comedians like Dikshit and Ghori, V.H.Desai, Gope, Yaqub, Noor Mohd. Charlie became indispensable parts of films being produced those days.

“Shaan”(1980) was produced by G P Sippy and directed by Ramesh Sippy. This was the same production house which had written history with their previous movie, viz. “Sholay”(1975). The makers of this movie wanted this movie to be as grand as “Sholay”(1975).

This iconic song from ‘Pyasa” was posted in the blog way back in 2009. I just revisited the page. There is only one comment there, so I was in two minds whether to leave my take on this song there on the page or include them in this post . I choose the latter so here goes:

Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 5
—————————————————–

It should be an interesting exercise – to identify and list out all the sales pitch songs, and then check which actors have performed them on screen. My intuition is that the exercise will indicate that most sales pitch songs, sung by male voices, have been performed on screen by either Johnny Walker or Mehmood.

Aha,

lailaa ki ungliyaan hain
majnoo ki pasliyaan hain
do do paise mein le lo babu
naram taazi kakdiyaan hain

I remember this jingle from childhood.  Occasionally used to hear it from the roadside hawkers, and once I even heard it in a radio play on Vividh Bharti.  Then many years later, I encountered this song also.  I used to wonder, whether the song came first or this jingle came first – which is based on which.  As I prepare this post, just casually I googled it, and found references to Lucknow and Agra where fresh vegetable vendors are known to use this jingle.  So maybe this is more of a folk tradition, converted into a film song later on.  Just like “Jumkha Gira Re Bareilly Ke Bazaar Mein“.  😉
