From the email that Khyati Behn sent me with the lyrics of this song, I reproduce the epithet she has used – “One more song to add to Lataji’s THE BEST MELODIES EVER COLLECTION.” I heard this song, and I do agree with her. A song par excellence, that has long been relegated to anonymity for various reasons and circumstances.

Of late I have discussed quite a few “stage performace” songs of Hindi movies. These movies typically have the lead actress of the movie performing a dance in an auditorium which is invariably sold out. Secondly, the hero of the movie is invariably among the audience. He in fact is in the front row of the audience. To this day I have not been able to find out how the hero manages to get tickts/pass for the front row of such performance even though he is does not play a politician/ administrator/ VIP who normally get to occupy front row on such occasions. I have in fact seen Amitabh Bachchan getting a front row seat for Nirupa Roy and Mukri getting front row seats for himself and his six burqa clad daughters in a song of “Amar Akbar Anthoni”. No, neither Amitabh Bachchan not Mukri are top administrators/ politicians of the town, but they still occupy the front row. 🙂 VIP culture is conspicuous by its absence in such picturisations. 🙂

The movie, which was based on abngla novel by Ashutosh Mukherjee, had Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Mehra, Rakhee Gulzar, Deven Varma, Sheetal, Aruna Irani, Om Shivpuri, Asit Sen, Amarnath, Gautam Sarin, Meena Roy, Goga Kapoor, Vijay Sharma, Anjan Srivastav, Samar Roy, Pratima Devi, Johney, Master Mayur, Master Romeo, Baby Khushboo, Master Vikas etc in it. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

I had never heard of the film BIHARI (1948) until a few days back when I came across a song from the film rendered by Lata Mangeshkar. Not much information about the story/plot of the film is available on the websites except that it belonged to the social genre. The film was produced under the banner of Samaj Chitra and was directed by K D Ketkar and A R Zamindar. The cast included B. Nandrekar, Surekha, H Prakash, Nimbalkar, Faiyyaz Bai, Shabnam, Samson etc. The film had 10 songs written by 4 lyricists – Kashyap (5), Hakeem Ashraf (1), Kumar Sharma (1), Munshi Farog (2) and the remaining one song not being attributed to any lyricist. The music for the songs were composed by Naresh Bhatttacharya and Ramkrishna Shinde.
