If one take a look at the films made in the golden era of Hindi films, one notices that many mythological movies were made during those decades. This trend continued to some extent even in the decade of seventies. However, after mid-seventies or by early eighties, mythological movies have become conspicuous by their absence.

Manoj Kumar (24.07.1937 – 04.04.2025) is synonymous with Bharat Kumar, yes! but he was much more. He was involved in multiple branches of film making – acting, production, direction, editing, writing (story, dialogues, lyrics). He has given many memorable films in various capacities. And very rightly he was honored with awards, and accolades time to time in his life journey. He was conferred with the highest award for films i.e. the ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’ in in ‘2015’. Earlier he had won the National Award for his movie Úpkaar’ in 1967, which was awarded as the second-best feature film of that year. He won the Filmfare awards in different categories viz as Best Actor for the film ‘Be-imaan-1972’, Best Director Award for the movies “Upkaar-1967″’and ‘Roti Kapadaa Aur Makaan-1974’, Producer award (with others) for “Upkaar-1967” and the award for Best Story and Dialogues for “Upkaar-1967”. He won the award for Best Editing for the movie ‘Shor’ and finally the Filmfare ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for films in ‘1999’. No other film personality has won four awards for a single movie. What is more interesting is that he was also nominated for the ‘Best Actor’ award for the same movie i.e. “Upkaar-1967”.

#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #

The song in this post is a song from a recent movie by the standards of this blog. It is from the year ‘1981’ and the title of the movie it is ‘Sant Gyaaneshwar’. I doubt how many of us remember that there was a movie with this title in the year 1981. As for me, I have never heard or read about this movie of 1981. On the other hand it is the movie ‘Sant Gyaaneshwar’ of 1964 that I am aware of from my childhood days. I remember this movie title because of its memorable songs. My guess is that this movie 1981 with the same title ended up becoming a forgotten movie immediately after its release. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 03.03.1981.

Today’s song is a very good Bhajan from the film Achhut-1940.
This film was made by Ranjit Movietone. The director was Chandulal Shah, Lyricist P.L.Santoshi and the M.D. was Gyan Dutt. The cast included Gohar Mamajiwala, Motilal, Vasanti, Charlie, Sitara Devi, Mazhar, Yakub and others.
Hindi film industry’s growth in Bombay in the early years from 1920s to 1940s was contributed to by 2 major communities. One of them was the Gujarati businessmen who immediately identified this business as the future gold mine. The other major community was the local Marathi, who lent their brain and hard work to this industry. As the time went by, people from Punjab, UP, Bengal and other states of India joined hands to help this industry to prosper. However, till the mid 1950s it was the Gujarati Sethias who poured the finances. Financiers like Sampat Sheth, Gokuldas Pasta, Manik Sheth Patel, Chunilal Munim, Mangaldas Parekh, Abdulali Yusufali, Mohd Ali Rangwala, Chimanlal Desai, Bhogilal Dave, Mayashanker Bhatt etc. only supplied the money, but never dabbled in other departments nor did they learn anything about the film making, more than what was needed to get some profits.
