Four films in his debut year. An accomplishment that is not claimed by many other music directors. The year – 1966. And the films – ‘Thakur Jarnail Singh’, ‘Smuggler’, ‘Shera Daku’ and ‘Husn Aur Ishq’. And a sampler of hits from these films – the all time favorite “Hum Tere Bin Jee Na Sakenge Sanam”; the timeless Rafi Sb – Suman Kalyanour duet “Hum Jahaan Hai Wo Maqaam Husn Aur Ishq Hai”; the lilting Mukesh solo “Ae Mere Dil Teri Manzil”; the haunting Lata solo “Intezaar Ka Aalam, Tanhaai Aur Hum”; the racy cabaret number by Lata – “Dil Ka Lagaana Is Duniya Mein”. Songs all made memorable by the lilting tunes mixed with wonderful rhythm and orchestration – the music coming from the mind of Ganesh Prasad Sharma.
Remembering music director Ganesh – he passed away on 28th March, 2000. He was 58.

Today’s song is from a relatively unknown or rather less known film ‘Vasanti’ (1938). The film was made by Minerva Movietone. The film was given to a novice for direction – KM Multani. He was with Sohrab Modi since his drama days and worked as a cinematographer for Modi’s first two films made by his Stage Films Company. After this first film, Multani also directed 4 more films, namely ‘Virginia’ (1940), ‘Vaseeyat’ (190,) ‘Ujala’ (1942) and ‘Umang’ (1944).

Ah, a post waiting for some time now to come on board. This post and this song is specially for dear Avinash ji. 🙂 🙂
As you listen to the song, and the words settle down in the mind, you can almost imagine – Avinash ji, on his flight back from Kenya to India, thinking about this song. And then the landing at Mumbai, then passing thru the immigration and baggage collect. He bumps into an old friend while waiting for the bags. The friend asks him where from he is returning. Avinash ji says, Kenya. The friend says – अरे यार, वो भी कोई जगह है देखने की, see, I am returning from Barcelona, now that is a place to visit. And instantly Avinash ji breaks into this song, telling his friend “Tum Ne Dekha Kya Bhala, Gar Na Dekha Aafrika”. And there is a loud applause from the crowd waiting for their baggage.

Indian films can not copy the costly scenes, sets and A grade actors for C grade films, so they make do with childish cheap sets, unknown producers or directors, actors who are at the fag end of their careers and overall an easy treatment to films. It is painful to see such films.
