na tu zameen ke liye hai na aasmaan ke liye
tera wajood hai sirf dastaan ke liye

palat ke su-e-chaman dekhne se kya hogaa
wo shaakh hi na rahi jo thhi aashiyaan ke liye

garaz paarast jahaan mein wafaa talaash na kar
ye shai bani hai kisi dusre jahan ke liye

Thus wrote Sahir Ludhianvi for the film ‘Daastaan’ (1972). Here he takes a cue from Allama Iqbal who said ….

na tu zameen ke liye hai na aasmaan ke liye
jahaan hai tere liye tu nahin jahaan ke liye

Ever the cynic….

Since the day making of talkie films started in India, till today, no one knows how many actors have worked in films. Few years back, one gentleman had made a list of 7000 actors up to year 2000 and it was posted on a site, which is now defunct. Ordinary film buffs do not know all the names. The experts, perhaps, may know more. Fact remains that there are only few actors known to all and few known to some.

Missing Films of 1960s – 84
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Another very obscure and unfamiliar film; and another wonderful set of songs that probably have not seen the light of the day. The experience keeps reiterating itself.

The film is ‘Takht Aur Talwar’ from 1970. And the song – an exuberant challenge, rendered by Suman Kalyanpur.  The production company is titled as Kanchanganga Films, Bombay. And practically no other information available, as far as the producer, director and the star cast is concerned.

Aah haa haa, what fun – “हम भी अगर बच्चे होते॰ ॰ ॰” and all the rest of the exuberant pandemonium that is involved in being a child – does it not give you a high of the mischievous anarchy that we have always enjoyed; sometimes secretly and most of the time overtly – “ना नौकरी की चिंता, ना रोटी की फिकर”.

To the child in all of us, who never grows up. I am sure you all know such ’children’. And I am also sure we all are very well acquainted with the person we see every day in the mirror, no matter whether there is hair on the pate to comb or no. 🙂  I dearly remember one of the managers I have worked with in the US, completely bald but very energetic – he always introduced himself as – “. . . a five year old imprisoned in a sixty five year old body”. And then, of course, we have our dear Bakshish Singh ji, who proudly claims his age to be 22-and-a-half years, three months and a few days, whenever you may ask him. And he has a stay order from the Supreme Court to back his claim. Too sad that I met him ten years after he got his orders; my stay order (from the same Supreme Court) stands at 32. 😀 😀

With today’s song, I am introducing not only a Debuting film, but also a great stage actor singer of the Marathi Theatre of yore. The film is Charnon ki daasi-1941 and the singer is Master Avinash.

Happy November to Atuldom

Start of the winters. Bangalore has suddenly turned colder post Navaratri and gearing up for the next most important festival in India – Deepawali.

‘Saajan Bina Suhaagan’ – released in 1978 – was produced and directed by Saawan Kumar Tak. The songs were written by Indeevar and music was by Usha Khanna. When I had heard the songs of this movie I had imagined Usha Khanna to be a rather young person. It was much later I became enlightened that she was also the music director for another set of songs which I love to hear – songs from ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ (1959). But that is not the purpose of this post.

‘य’ – ये भीगी भीगी रात गगन पर तारों की बारात ॰ ॰ ॰

हम बेखुदी में तुमको पुकारे चले गए ॰ ॰ ॰

Seems to be like another life time, that we have been waiting, and calling out for you, in the wilderness of nowhere. Alas, but it is not to be. . .

Really spoilt for choices with the letter ‘य’. And I settle for this delightful twosome of a song – Geeta Dutt with Rafi Sb. The film is an obscure ‘Doctor Z’ from 1959. Produced and directed by Jaal, the films comes from the banner of Baliwala Films, Bombay. The star cast of this film is listed as Shakeela, Mahipal, Heeralal, Helen, Vinod Diwani, Krishna Kumari, Sundar, Mirza Musharraf, Dalpat, Tuntun, Nasreen, Shetty, Bhudo Advani, Homi, Rusi, Bismillah, Baburao Pehalwan, Radheshyam, Rafiq, Hanuman, Bala Ram, Dhondu, MK Hasan, Karandiker, and Sheetal Kumar.

Missing Films of 1960s – 83

A delectable discovery, this wonderful duet of Asha ji and Usha ji. And one more film of the 1960s gets added to our blog today.

‘Tarzan 303’ – I was not even aware of this film before I started working on this series. And even now, no information is available, except what is there in the Geet Kosh. Indian film producers have a set fascination for the theme of Tarzan. From 1931 to 1980, no less than 15 films have been produced which contain ‘Tarzan’ in their title. And there probably are some more after 1980 also.

Today’s song is from a film called ‘Diwali Ki Raat’ (1956). This is a film in which singer Talat Mahmood acted as a hero opposite heroine Roopmala. Talat Mahmood (24-2-1924 to 9-5-1998) acted in 12 films from 1945 to 1958 and he also did a cameo role, singing a song-“Shukriya Ae Pyaar Tera Shukriya“, of  three and half minutes in film Aaram-1951. In his early career starting in Calcutta, he fell in love with a Bangla actress Latika Mullick. They got married on 20-2-1951. She was converted to Islam and was renamed Nasreen, who bore two children to Talat. As per a book by Manek Premchand, ‘Talat Mahmood – The Velvet Touch’, he sang 777 songs which included Hindi film songs, NFS and unreleased films etc. As per another source he sang 451 Hindi film songs from 259 Hindi films.
