As per Hindu mythology, the Sun god is travelling in the sky on a chariot pulled by seven horses. After pulling the chariot for a long time, the six horses are tired. It is the seventh horse who remains and continues to pull the chariot signifying it to be the horse of dreams and aspirations for the future. In 1952, Dr Dharamvir Bharati published his novella, ‘Suraj Ka Saatvan Ghoda’. I read the novella in full which is available online. The novella is written in narration style in which the protagonist, Manik Mulla narrates to his three friends, three separate romance stories relating to three girls. What is of interest is that Manik Mulla is not only the narrator of the stories, but he is also the characters in all the three stories who loves these three girls at different points of time in his life. As Agyeya said in his foreword to the novella, ‘Suraj Ka Saatvan Ghoda’ is not the one story comprising three stories, but three stories constituting one story. The author, in his introduction, has revealed that during his early period of writing, he was influenced by Marxist objectives rather than hardcore Marxism. Today’s song is from a C grade costume film ‘Aan Baan’ (1956).
I was in two minds while searching for songs of this film on YouTube. Firstly, whenever I tried to find a song of this film, invariably YouTube presented songs from the film ‘Aan Baan’ made in 1972. After getting tired of this behaviour of YT, I got an idea and I asked for songs from ‘Aan Baan’ (1972). Lo and behold ! YT promptly gave me songs from ‘Aan Baan’ (1956) ! I was in a fix whether to pat my back for this idea or to curse YT for its dumbness.

In the mid-1930s, Fearless Nadia was making waves in the role of a stunt woman in Wadia Movietone films, ‘Hunterwaali’ (1935), ‘Miss Frontier Mail’ (1936) ‘Hurricane Hansa’ (1937) and ‘Lutaaru Lalna’ (1938). So, films in the genre of ‘action/adventure’ becomes one of favorites of many film producing studios. Vijay Bhatt of Prakash Pictures also fell in line and made action/fantasy films around mid-1930s. They produced ‘His Highness’ (1937), ‘State Express’ (1938), ‘Hero No.1’ (1939) etc. ‘Bijlee’ (1939) was another Prakash Pictures’ film in this genre which was directed by Balwant Bhatt. The star cast included Jairaj and Pramila in the lead role supported by Munshi Khanjar, Zahoor, Shirin Bano, Athavale, Gulab, Jaal Writer, Shyam Sundar, Lallubhai Nayak etc.

‘Astitva’ (2000) was simultaneously produced in Marathi and Hindi under the banner of Friends India and Satyashwami Entertainment. The film was directed by Mahesh Manjrekar who also wrote the story and the screenplay. The main cast consisted of Tabu, Sachin Khedekar, Mohnish Behl, Smita Jaykar, Ravindra Mankani, Sunil Barve, Resham Seth and Kishore Nandlaskar with a friendly appearance by Namrata Shirodkar. Most of the actors came from Marathi theatre background.
