rok sakta hamen zindaan e balaa kya majrooh
hum to awaaz hain deewaaron se chhan jaate hain
Powerful lines, written while he was in prison – no, not under the British rule; that happened back in 1946-47. This was a second time he was imprisoned c1950-51, under the regime of a free India. A poet with leftist leanings, his progressive writings were considered a threat by the British regime (which is understandable), and also considered a threat by then government of Morarji Desai (in Bombay). A song titled ‘Aman Ka Jhanda’ was sung at a meeting of poor labor class workers in the Parel area. Being the author, and the on stage presenter of this song, drew the ire of the establishment, and arrest warrants were issued in his name. He was arrested after being underground for some time, and sentenced to one year imprisonment. Morarji Desai suggested that he may render an apology for his writings, and he would be a free man. In response, the young revolutionary poet wrote this couplet.
rok sakta hamen zindaan e balaa kya majrooh
hum to awaaz hain deewaaron se chhan jaate hain
No walls of a prison
No tyranny of a jailer
Has the power to bind me
I am the voice (of conscience)
That permeates through
The walls of confinement

The month of ‘August’ holds a very special place in our hearts. We celebrate our Independence Day on the Fifteenth day of this month every year since 1947.
In 1942 the ‘Quit India Movement’ or the ‘Bharat Chhodo Andolan’ was launched on 8th August’1942 and Gandhi ji gave a call of ‘Do or Die’. Starting 9th Aug’1942 in the next few days the whole nation witnessed the greatest uprising against the British. Today (9 august 2017) is the 75th anniversary of that important date.

Wow, what a song, what a lovely song, what a lovely marathon of a song; so full of words, so full of emotions, so full of insistence of emotions. Rajendra Krishan has outdone himself in writing this song. And so does C Ram, outshine himself in tying this song into threads of music. And what rendition, Lata ji outshines herself. I am hearing this song for the first time today, and have simply fallen in love with it.

Today’s song is from the film Paisa hi paisa-56. It is sung by Kishore kumar, Lata and Asha. The composer is Anil Biswas. The Lyricist was Majrooh Sultanpuri for all songs. It was a Mehboob Production film and it was directed by Mehrish.

Recently, Tommydan55 has uploaded the film PREM KAHAANI (1937) with some cleaning and restoration works relating to both the video and the audio. The full film is here. The result was that I got motivated to watch the movie without much of the strain on my eyes. What a film! As against my expectation of a slow moving story of the film which was my experience in most of the films of the 30s, this film was different. The slick editing of the film ensured that the story moved in a pace comfortable for viewing. This may be the reason as to why I could watch the movie in one sitting which I seldom do especially in respect of old classic Hindi films of 30s and 40s. The DVD/VCD of the movie is of 1 hour 30 minutes which means that the film has been heavily edited for DD/VCD including a couple of songs. But I did not find much issue with the continuity of the story.
