It is not that we do not remember him on the other days of the year except his anniversaries. Far from it. We in this blog have averaged more that one Rafi song a day for the five years and more that this blog has been in existence. In other words, we remember him everyday. This is the title song of Mukti (1977). Death and Loss play a central role in the film in different forms. Thus this song is used in bits and parts throughout the film. I have included the complete audio version and also the bits which I could find, which were used in the film. Since these bits give away the ending of the film, a SPOILER ALERT! Please don’t watch the videos of the film, if you don’t want the ending to be revealed.

Mukti (1977) stars Shashi Kapoor, Vidya Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar and Bindiya Goswami. Shashi Kapoor plays Vidya Sinha’s husband. This happy couple has a daughter, who would grow up to be Bindiya Goswami. In the happier times of this small family, the father sings a lullaby to his daughter. As usual in films, these happy times don’t last forever and the father goes missing and then it is the mother’s turn to sing the lullaby with a similar mukhdaa but different antaras. Both versions are included here.

A long time ago there was a song “Bachpan ke din bhula na dena” (Deedar 1951). Then there was “Bachpan ke din bhi kya din thhey” (Sujata 1959). Well we generally remember everything that happens in our life (good bad or ugly). But the good things of life we definitely do not forget and say “These are a few of my favourite things” (The Sound of Music – I only know the 1965 movie). Now all these movies mentioned above were before my time but the songs I have referred to from them are true to every one I suppose.
