Today’s song is a Manna Dey NFS.

We have just completed 2 years without the Ace Singer, Manna Dey. He left us on 24-10-2013. He was probably the last of the Golden Age male singers, who started singing in the 40s. I called him an Ace singer and most readers would agree with it too, but Manna Dey never got rated as the No 1, or 2 or 3 or even 4th singer. Every A grade composer agreed that he was a great singer, but no one would call him to sing a song, on a regular basis. Though Manna Dey sang for almost every composer of his times, he was neither a favourite of any Music Director, nor did any top actor insist for him as a playback singer of his choice. So, strangely, while recognition was there, results were not matching !

Mukesh and his Composers – 8
————————————–
It was on 27th August 1976 in faraway Detroit city of US that Mukesh breathed his last after suffering a massive heart attack. He was there with Lata Mangeshkar and his son Nitin Mukesh for live performances in a few US cities. It was the 7th or 8th out of 10 performances to be performed.

After film music became popular among the masses, Non film songs were relegated to the background. They not only became difficult to locate, but also became unknown for the newer generation. Compared to the fast, foot tapping songs of today, NFS were very slow and poetic. In most of the NFS ( except a few Jagmohan songs),the use of orchestra was not even worth a mention. Hardly 2-3 instruments were used in most of these songs.

Mukesh and his Composers – 5a
—————————————-

In my last post on Mukesh’s birth anniversary(sab thhaath pada rah jaavega), we saw his association with Khaiyyam in terms of his “film songs”. I had said that I would come back with his NFS for the composer sometime later. Though I was cognizant about most of the NFS, I was not very sure of the complete list and hence restricted myself to the film songs. When I wrote that post, I too was not aware that “sometime later” would mean the very next post, that’s this one.

Harish Raghuvanshi ji the compiler of “Mukesh Geetkosh” (1985) sent a mail to Arunkumar sir, to be forwarded to self, with the details of the NFS of Mukesh for Khaiyyam. Details received from such an eminent and authoritative personality ought to be included and presented before I proceed with other composers. Harish ji’s mail was sent on 22nd July itself, but because of my preoccupations (honestly, it includes lethargy) this post got delayed for two weeks.

Today’s song is an appropriate song for this season. It is about Rain drops. It is a Non Film song by Lata ji.

Today (19 july 2015) is the seventh birth anniversary of this blog. It was started on this day in 2008.

As mentioned in earlier posts today, there was no celebration in the blog when it turned one year old. We began to celebrate the anniversaries from subsequent years. The sixth year celebration, viz the celebration last year in july 2015 was on a grand and ambitious scale. It on on that occasion that the blog touched the magical mark of TEN THOUSAND songs.

Mukesh and his Composers – 4
——————————–
This beautiful Thursday morning let us listen to a bhajan by Mukesh in praise of Shirdi Sai Baba.

The philanthropic and humanitarian deeds of Mukesh are well known and documented. No article on Mukesh is complete without a mention of these activities during his life time. Distribution of blankets to the poor in winter, insistence to share the same boarding as that of his music arrangers during out-station concerts, performing shows for children and neighbours without charging any fees etc are few of the many examples. Also, being the senior-most among many of his contemporaries, he was often a peace maker amongst various disputes that arose in the film fraternity amongst artists. He was often called a noble soul for all these reasons.

I am thankful to Ava Suri who, about a month back, had suggested to me to consider presenting a NFS ghazal ‘saaqi ki har nigaah pe bal khaa ke pee gaya’ (1965) sung by Rafi. Let me confess that I had missed listening to this great ghazal of Jigar Moradabadi all these years. This request gave me an opportunity to study in detail the ghazals of Jigar Moradabadi who was considered the last icon of classical Urdu poetry. He was such an interesting personality that I am tempted to write a full length article on him for the Blog which I will do in the near future.

He was a freedom fighter, a revolutionary, a journalist, a parliamentarian and a poet. He was associated with Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India and later Indian Muslim League. Bal Gangadhar Tilak was his mentor. He was the man behind coining the slogan ‘Inquilab Zindabad’. He was a member of Constituent Assembly for drafting the constitution of independent India. He was a devoutly muslim who made his annual pilgrimage to Mecca. But he also made it a point to visit Mathura on Krishna Janmashtmi day. He described himself as:

darwesh o inquilab maslak hai mera
Sufi Momin hoon and ishtiraaki muslim

(I have chosen a path of asceticism and revolution. I am a Sufi Momin and a socialist Muslim).

He was Maulana Hasrat Mohani.
