It has been full three years almost to the day, that the last song of this music director was posted here on this blog. After three long years, we have another post with a song composed by this maverick composer whose quality of music is exemplary, but the quality of his social interface left a lot to be desired. Uncompromising to the last, he managed to do a lot less work, than he could have. A tale of regrets all the way, for himself, and for his fans – that we were bereft of more of his creativity.

Remembering Sajjaad Husain on the anniversary of his birth today (15th June).

There have been three movies titled “Sanskaar”, which were released in 1940, 1952 and 1958. The songs of these three movies are difficult to come by. Conventional wisdom suggests that songs of recent movies should be more easily available but the case is just the reverse here. Songs of “Sanskaar”(1940) and “Sanskaar”(1952) are more easily available than that of “Sanskaar”(1958). 🙂

hazaaron khwaahishen aisi
ke har khwaahish pe dam nikle
bahut nikle mere armaan
magar phir bhi kam nikle

roz aise hi hota hai, it happens almost every day. Every day, there is a song that comes to mind, or a song that someone reminds me of, or a ‘new’ old song that I get to hear – a song that is not yet on the blog, or maybe not yet online even. There is an immediate urge, a rush to sit down at my desk and finger type a new post on my laptop. And also upload it online, if need be. Many a time I even start it. The melody continues to hum in the mind. Always overlaid on to another melody that is now a fixture in the backdrop, a melody that you have heard me mention often in my writings – ye hansta hua kaarvan zindagi ka na poochho chala hai kidhar

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 48
—————————————–
Ichak daanaa beechak daanaa daane oopar daanaa from ‘Shri 420’ (1955) has become one of the immortal songs of the 1950s. I can watch the video clip of this song umpteen times without reaching the saturation point. For our generation, it was an unique song in that it was the first song for us where riddles had been incorporated with answers in the song itself. n this song, a teacher (Nargis) is teaching her students the identification of a fruit, a vegetable and a bird through the riddles. This was a novelty and the song became a hit in our school so much so that during the recess, we used to devise out own riddles, albeit sometimes with wrong hints for others to solve them.
