Most nice songs usually become popular. Or is it really so ? There is much legwork involved before the songs of a movie can become popular. The movie, as well as its songs need to arouse the curiosity of public before their release. For that the movie and its songs need to be marketed. In case the movie has saleable stars and the movie is made by a well known production house with deep pockets, then the songs of that movie stand a good chance of being heard.

Shaque (1976) is an off-beat social drama, with a notable star cast. The main players in this film are Vinod Khanna, Shabana Azmi, Utpal Dutt, Durga Khote, Bindu, Farida Jalal, besides other lesser known actors. The movie is written, co-produced and directed by the husband wife team of Aruna Raje and Vikas Desai. (This team also wrote and directed Gehraayee (1980) and Sitam (1982)). The theme of Shaque is about a marriage endangered by doubts and fear.

But the artists who worked in the earlier decades are not all that well known, and worse, it is often believed that they were not in the same league as the artists who came later. A wonderful gem of a duet from Hamdard (1953). This is such a wonderful classical jugalbandi, such a pleasure to listen with your eyes closed. It is almost a divine composition, a signature composition by Anil Da, with more than one raga blended seamlessly into a single flow. A virtuous melody, and a pleasure to listen to.

Here is another gem of a song from the 1964 movie Hameer Hatth. This is a semi classical composition, rendered so well by Manna Dey. The composoition is by Sanmukh Babu Upadhyaya, and the beautiful lyrics in chaste Hindi, are by Neelkanthh Tiwari. The words are just beautiful, and need a careful listen.
