The song made immortal, not just by Sahir-Ravi-Manna Da, but more so by the performance of Balraj Sahni (as Lala Kedarnath) on screen, with a coy Achla Sachdev (as Laxmi Kedarnath) getting all bashful and pink in face, realizing what a display of romanticism has been unleashed by ‘Lalaji’. A song that eventually became the signature performance for Balraj Sahni. And over the decades, the song has steadily grown on the collective minds of the people and assumed a cult status as the banner song for golden age romance. Yes, I hear this song played often at silver and golden anniversaries of marriages.

In the early era there was a fair exchange of film themes and music between all the centres of film production like Bombay, Lahore, Calcutta, Madras, Poona and Kolhapur( and Hyderabad and Bangalore at a later time). That is why sometimes Bilingual films were made. Madras was not directly interested in making films in Hindi upto 1948,till Vasan’s CHANDRALEKHA-48 had an All India release with over 700 prints, in those days.

“Zehreela Insaan” (1974) was Rishi Kapoor’s second movie after his debut as a lead actor in “Bobby” (1973). He took a major risk going from his chocolate hero in “Bobby” to a hero with dark shades in “Zehreela Insaan”. The box-office, unfortunately, didn’t think highly of this commendable act. The film flopped and from then on he hardly ventured into this territory again.

I asked this question to my friend and he hazarded a figure of 2000. I put the number at around 3000 to 4000, myself.

“Anuradha” (1960) was an L B Films production. It was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherji. The movie had Balraj Sahni, Leela Naidu, Abhi Bhattacharya, Ranu, Nazir Hussain, Mukri, Asit Sen, Manav Chitnis, Bhudo Advani, Rashid Khan, Hari Shivdasani, Asim Kumar etc in it.
