Today, January 5, 2025, is the 44th Remembrance Day of Ramchandra Narhar Chitalkar, popularly known as C Ramchandra as a music director and Chitalkar as a playback singer. He regaled the connoisseurs of Hindi film music with his melodious musical compositions in the 1950s and 1960s. He was the pioneer of introducing popular foot-tapping songs with western musical influence and western musical instruments like saxophone and guitar in his compositions as early as in the 1940s. At the same time, he was composing classical raag-based as well as folk-based songs. He was trained in Hindustani classical music for six years first under Vinayakbua Patwardhan and later Shankarrao Sapre.

Despite producing many melodious songs especially in the 1950s, it is unfortunate that C Ramchandra did not get any award – whether National Film Award or Filmfare Award as a music director. The first Filmfare Awards were announced in April 1954 for films released in 1953. But his film, ‘Anarkali (1953) was not in the reckoning for the best music director’s award. His film, ‘Aazaad’ (1955) and ‘Paighaam’ (1959) were nominated for the Filmfare Award in best music director category but did not win. But the fact remains that many of his melodious and rhythmic songs of 1950s are still popular among the current generation which itself is a great award to a creative genius.

Today’s song is from a social family drama- Bhai Saheb-1954. I have not seen this film, but as per Wiki and IMDB, the story revolves around a kind and talented man who works in Radio as a counselor for needy people and solves their problems by his means, which has a positive response. He falls in love with a sweet girl and wants to marry her but first he must complete the task of reuniting other individuals, leading to consequences. The story is not very attractive or different from normal love stories. As compared to the other musical and entertaining films of 1954, this film was actually nowhere.

The 50’s decade was called the Golden Era of HFM, not for nothing. Year after year, the films provided excellent songs, different film Genres, convincing stories, superb acting and Full Paisa Vasool Entertainment. In such a scenario an average music, beaten track stories, mediocre acting, poor direction and lustreless short lived songs had no chance of winning. Today’s film was one such film.

(Music Composer R.D. Burman’s Remembrance Anniversary)
——————————————————————

Today 4th January 2026 is the Remembrance Anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman fondly known by his nickname ‘Pancham’.

On this occasion we are paying our tributes to him by coverig a few of his compositions that have not yet been covered in the blog.

So far, we already have covered four songs composed by Pancham (including one shared by Nahm jee, which incidentally is a Pancham composition though not mentioned in the writeup). The earlier posts had songs sung by Mohd Rafi, Amit Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Yesudas and Kavita Krishnamurty. These four posts have taken care of several human emotions and moods except the feeling of sadness. Also so far, we have not covered a song in the voice of Kishore Kumar composed by Pancham today, without which the tributes will remain incomplete. In this post I am presenting a sad song sung by Kishore Kumar.
