Today, 24th February is the birth anniversary of Talat Mehmood (born 1924).

There are approximately 650 film songs identified, as being sung by him. It is a known fact that during the decade of 1950s, Talat Sb spent more of his energies in trying to establish himself as an actor-singer. He had the presence and the looks of a leading hero, plus a voice that at one time had stolen the hearts of film goers and listeners. But the on-screen combination somehow did never strike a rapport with the audience, getting only a lukewarm reception at the box office. Rising from the mid 1940s along with the other mainstream singers, he allowed his ratings as a playback singer to falter, in his effort to be a singing start. Now, it is just a matter of speculation how the history of Hindi films and Hindi film music could have been different, had some different choices had been made by Talat Sb.

Today’s song is from film ‘Pehla Aadmi’ from 1950.

India became an independent nation on 15th August, 1947. It saw the end of about 100 years of protest, riots, mutinies and revolutionary attacks on the British Raj, who had ruled us for so many years – 190 years, to be exact. That is after Robert Clive won the battle of Plassey in 1757. Besides political upheaval, independence had different impact on different people in India.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Milan’ (1946).

Bengali people, in general, are fond of reading. The literacy percentage of Bengal during last century and before that has been quite noteworthy. The literate population of Bengal is divided in two parts. One is Bhadralok– a term used to indicate upper and middle class – affluent and educated people; and the other is Madhabit (or what we call a middle class in rest of India). Both these classes of society in Bengal were patrons of books. In addition, Bengal also boasts of a large number of very famous authors. Eminent writers like Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chatterji, Sarat Chandra Chatterji, Sunil Gangopadhyaya, Bibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyay, Satyajit Ray, Mahashweta Devi, Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay, Shardendu Bandopadhyay, Humayun Ahmed, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Michael Madhusudan, Manik Bandopadhyay, Premendra Mitra, Badal Sircar, Sukumar Rai, Jibanand Das, Rajnikant Sen and many others were, and continue to be popular in Bengal.

The beautiful ‘अलंकृत’ verses like

गुन गुन गुन गुंजन धुन गूँजे भंवरन की. . .
and
बहे गंध अंध मधु मंद पवन उपवन की. . .

can only come from the thoughts of a poet whose insight into the human emotions and feelings is as deep, as his breadth of the knowledge of vocabulary and the grammar of the language, and then, plus his creativity to weave together the emotions and the words, in a manner that will make the mind pause and think. . . wow.

Remembering Pt Narendra Sharma, poet extraordinaire, on the anniversary of his passing away today (11th February).

Today (11 February 2018) is the birth anniversary of Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847 – October 18, 1931). People may argue that he has nothing to do with HFM, but I would argue back that there would be no HFM but for Edison. One out of Edison’s countless inventions was the invention of phonograph, which made it possible to record sound. All the HFM music that we are listening to now owe their existence to this paradigm shifting invention in human existence. We have no way of knowing how the great personalities of the past sounded like, but thanks to Edison, we got a device that could record the voices of people for posterity. That way the contemporaries of Edison and those who came later has their lives enriched to a degree that is beyond our imagination.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 4
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

/‘ई’/

‘उ’ – उठो बुलबुलों तोड़ दो तीलियाँ

दिल की आवाज़ भी सुन॰ ॰ ॰

वो अगर चे सुन सकते, हम तो सुनाते ही रहते॰ ॰ ॰

But now, the voice has gone to distant lands unknown, where our call will not reach, and his voice will not come back again. It seems like a thing of yesterday that I saw him perform live on Doordarshan; or that I read about another award in the Filmfare magazine, that he had stood up and walked up to receive. The mind simply does not believe that he has not been with us mortals for the past almost four decades. कहाँ से ले के आएँ, अपने बूते की बात नहीं॰ ॰ ॰ दिल को ही समझाना पड़ता है।

Moving forward with the series of duets – I have to skip ‘ई’ because no duet song starting with this vowel is available. So I come to ‘उ’, as the starting letter for today’s song.

The box office successes of ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chaand’ (1960) and ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963) were mainly attributed to musical bonanzas they offered to the cinegoers in general. In that process, the captain of the ships, i.e., the director of the films who had an important role in making the films the box office success was largely ignored. In those days, like many, I identified the first film with Guru Dutt and the music director Ravi. In case of ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963), I identified the film with the musical and lyrical feasts of Roshan and Sahir Ludhianvi. I was not aware at that time that these two successful films were directed by M Sadiq.

After few years when I did come to know of M Sadiq, I thought of him as a new upcoming director who specialised in directing Muslim social and historical films. This was borne out of the facts that his subsequent two films were ‘Bahu Begum’ (1967) and ‘Noor Jahan’ (1967). How wrong I was!
