One more song, THIRD of the three songs from 1948 film “Chaand Sitare’ by Lata-ji is presented here. (By the way, in my last article in this series, I had wrongly written that ‘Jab Dil Mein Tere Dard Ho….’ was the first one. out of three songs from ‘Chand Sitare’. Actually it was second.)

The playback system came in to vogue some time in 1935 in Bombay film industry. The system really got stabilized only from early 40s. At that time,  among the female playback singers, Ameerbai Karnataki, Rajkumari, Zohrabai Ambaalewaali and Shamshad Begum dominated the Hindi film industry. There were other playback singers like Parul Ghosh, Zeenat Begum, Hamida Bano, Naseem Akhtar, Mohantara Talpade, Dilshad Begum etc. While a few among them had migrated to Pakistan, others  playback singers either could not stand against the competition with the well- established playback singers or they had to give up their careers, probably for domestic and personal reasons.

Whenever I listen to songs rendered by Hafeez Khan Mastana, popularly known as Khan Mastana, I feel very sad and sorry for him. He was the son of Ustad Waheed Khan of Etawah Gharana who was a well-known sitar and surbahar player. The renowned sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan was Khan Mastana’s first cousin.

It is already the Hindu month of Shraavvan (Saawan) in North India and the month starts for the states south of Vindhya, from Wednesday, August 3rd 2016. But with heavy rains for the last two days, the hills around Sanjay Gandhi National Park (I stay close to the Park) turning green and the chirping of birds in the early morning in our society, I feel that I am already in the midst of Saawan.

There have been quite a few Ghulam Mohammed compositions posted on the blog in the last few days. Any additions of such great but under-rated composers is always a cause of pleasure. I say un-rated because apart from his most remembered Mirza Ghalib (1954) and a rather un-finished Pakeezah(1971), Ghulam Mohammed’s immense talent remains largely unappreciated. It’s another matter that he himself was also to be blamed for remaining behind the curtains of Naushad’s much celebrated successes. It’s no surprise that not much information is available on him. There are not even many photographs of the great composer. However I did find this blog with a very fair and detailed description of his life and works. The importance of his talent can be measured with this line from the same article about his Pakeezah compositions.

This is a lovely foot tapping song from the film Saanwaria-49. It is sung by Shamshad Begam and Chitalkar, with music composed by C.Ramchandra himself.

Sometimes, things can’t get more rare than this. As we look for rare combination of artists, and especially singers, we come across combinations where two artists have worked together in a song, once or maybe twice in the entire history of Indian cinema. This song today, is one such song. It is a duet, rather I should correct myself, it is a trio of singers. There are two female voices, and one male voice. The male voice is not identified, even in the Geet Kosh listings. The female voices are Shamshad Begum and Hamida Bano. And the year is 1948.
