The star cast included Karan Dewan, Nigar Sultana, Nirupa Roy, Dulari, Ram Avatar, SN Tripathi, Pandit Iqbal etc. The film was reviewed in March 1949 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine. DEEWAANI (1947) was produced by Sohrab Modi under the banner of Minerva Movietone and it was directed by Y D Sarpotdar. The star cast included Wasti, Mumtaz Shanti, Husn Bano, Ghulam Hussain, Abu Bakar, Chanda Bai, Jilani, Sadat Ali, Satya Rani etc. There were 8 songs in the film written by Shams Azimabadi (6) and Sewan Rizvi (2) which were set to music by Gyan Dutt. From the star cast and a couple of songs that I heard, the film seems to belong to social genre, probably a family drama. One song from the film has been covered in the Blog.

In spite of its listing in ‘Lata Samagra, and Gandhar’ as Lata song, I had my doubt about the singer, listening to the Mp3 Audio that I had since long time. Searching for the video on you tube I found two postings and both had mentioned the singer as Mohantara Ajinkya (Talpade).

JAWAAB (1942) was produced under the banner of M P Productions and it was directed by P C Barua who was also the lead actor in the movie alongwith Kanan Devi and Jamuna. The box office success of this film was very important for him as he has turned producer under his newly created production company, M P Productions after leaving New Theatres in 1940. His first two films ‘Uttarayan’ and ‘Rani’ under his own banner were financial disasters. But the success of ‘Shesh Uttar (in Bengali) and its Hindi version ‘Jawaab’ (1942) silenced his critics who were predicting slow and sure downfall for him from his earlier success of ‘Devdas’ (1935) and ‘Mukti’ (1937).
