Controls on film production were tightened by the Government. I.P.T.A. became operative with its first staged p0lay ‘ Nibanna’. Film Kismet became one of the biggests Hits ever. V.Shantaram’s Rajkamal Kalamandir debuted with Shakuntala, as did Mehboob with his film Najma. Government made showing of Newsreel before any film mandatory. Today’s song is from a stunt film Jungle Princess-1942.

This was a film with Tarzan’s story. The only difference here was that the ‘Tarzan’ was a GIRL ! The story behind this film is interesting.

Today’s song is a marching song from the film ‘Veer Babruwahan’ (1950).

Now, the name ‘Babruwahan’ is a strange name and I am sure most readers have never heard it, at least those who are below 60 years of age. I heard his story for the first time from my grandfather when I was about 8 years old. Being an odd name and sounding even funny, it remained in my memory. Later I found his story in the 14th parvaThe Ashwamedha Parva of Mahabharat in the subparva 91-92.

After the introduction of playback singing system in Hindi films around 1935, many accredited singers from All India Radio (AIR), especially from Bombay (Mumbai), Lahore, Calcutta (Kolkata), Delhi, Lucknow/Kanpur etc got opportunities as playback singers in Hindi films. Apart from the popularity they got from the songs they sang for the films, the remuneration they received from playback singing was much higher than the fees they got from AIR.

Today’s song is from an obscure film Vakil Saheb-1943.

The second world war started in 1939 and ended in 1945. The effects of wartime started being felt to people in the world, whether involved or not in the war. Shortages of essentials due to transport restrictions and Petrol shortages were acute when the war continued unabated and spread to almost every part of the world. Major powers like England , Japan, Europe, Russia and America dragged countries which were under their rule or influence and those who were friendly to them. This included India too.

Today’s song is from a Romantic cum Mystery film – Apradhi-1949.

Although HFGK labels it as a ‘Social’ film, I found that this film is half-way through a Romantic film and the second half is full of Mystery, hence I called it a Romantic cum Mystery film.

Today’s song is from a semi Mythological film, Maya Bazar-1949.

I said ” Semi Mythological” film and there is a reason for it. Both Ramayan and Mahabharat are more than 5000 year old. Since generations,Indians have been infatuated with the various stories from these sacred books. Actually, Mahabharat is 4 times bigger than Ramayan. Ramayan contains stories of Loyalty, Obedience, righteous behaviour. Ideal Human Qualities, war against evil, Ideal democracy and good Just Governance. In short-everything that is ideal and good.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Maa Baap ki Laaj’-1946.

The film was made by Hind Pictures – owned by actor, director and producer Nazir Ahmed Khan. However, in this film, though he acted as the Hero, he did not direct the film. The film was directed by Nanubhai Bhatt. For Nanubhai this film was a ‘ hard to come by’ social film for direction, because he was known as a director for B and C grade stunt and costume films only. The cast of the film was Swarnalata, Nazir, Jayant, Kusum Deshpande, Majid, Gulab, Anwari and many others.
