I was a bit surprised to note that Mohammed Rafi had to struggle for nearly 5 years to establish him as one of the leading male playback singers in Hindi film industry. It is said that he recorded his first song for a Punjabi film as early as 1942. It took him another 2 years to get his first song in a Hindi film ‘Pahele Aap’ (1944), a duet with Shyam thus beginning his long lasting collaboration with Naushad. It took another year for him to get an opportunity to sing his first solo song ‘ae dil-e-nakaam tamanna’ in ‘Hamara Sansaar’ (1945) followed by ‘teraa khilonaa toota baalak’ in ‘Anmol Ghadi’ (1946), the latter one under the baton of Naushad.

During my childhood days, I had heard more about Suraiya than any other contemporary female actors like Mudhubala, Nargis etc. As I know now, both Madhubala and Nargis were more successful in terms of their box office hit films than that of Suraiya in the 50s. But it was Suraiya who was the most discussed star at that time. I guess that her charismatic personality invited keen interest from cinegoers and her fans in the same way as was the case with Rajesh Khanna in the 70s. The building in which she used to stay at Marine Drive was an important ‘tourist spot’ in those days for the visitors in the city. People would to wait for her ‘darshan’ which eluded most of them . After many years, this type of adulation was witnessed outside Rajesh Khanna’s bungalow in the 70s and Amitabh Bachchan’s bungalow even now.

Curiosity is a natural emotion every man has. One is always curious to know about his friends, environment, neighbours, even enemies. This curiosity becomes an urge when the subject of curiosity is a celebrity. Celebrities always show only one side of their life, usually the positive one. People are anxious to know more about them, their private lives etc. That is why autobiographies of celebrities are lapped up by the public.

My curiosity in the Keshav Talpade directed Tigress (1948) was piqued when Mr. Sudhir Kapur posted the patriotic number Hum iss zameen ke hain from this film on the occasion of India’s Republic Day a couple of days ago.
