Sandhya Mukherjee – a voice that is comparatively heard less frequently on the Hindi film screen, is a big name in the world of Bangla music and Bangla film music. In fact her association with Hemant Kumar as a duet singer, is almost as legendary as the on screen pair of Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen. Majority of the duets of these two actors in Bangla cinema, have been playback sung by these two singers.
Greetings to Sandhya ji on her 83rd birthday (4th october).

Chaandni raaten – Song no. 12
————————————–
chaand ek bewaa ki choodi ki tarah toota huaa
har sitaara besahaaraa soch mein dooba huaa
gham ke baadal ek janaaze ki tarah thehre huye
hichkiyon ke saaz par kehtaa hai dil rotaa huaa
Thus began a classic Talat Mahmood song ‘koyi nahin mera iss duniya mein’ from the movie ‘Daag’.

Suraiyya is one singer whose songs are now almost fully covered in the blog and we have the full, accurate and verified list of her songs. There are now less than twenty Suraiyya songs that remain to be discussed. The encouraging fact is that around four or five of these songs are available as of now. Yesterday nahm discussed one song which I was unable to locate till now. Today I am discussing another as yet unavailble Suraiyya song.

Songs from Artist name movies- article 1

While browsing through the list of film titles from 1931 to recent times, I was wondering how the names of films are decided. In the silent era, almost every silent film used to have one name for the purpose of Censoring and then in every state, the film would have a new title in local language. Usually, the silent films used to have One English name and one Hindi name, like e.g. Samudra manthan or Churning of the Sea, Amarsingh Dagger or Marwad’s Moti, The Leopard or The Lal Cheetah, The Treasure or Khazana, Society Scoundrel or Shareef Badmash, Dancing Girl or gutter ka Gulab, The Enchantress or the Zalim Jadugarni etc etc.

Mathura ka peda, Mysore pak, Agra ka petha, Dharwad peda, Gokak karadant, Lonawala chikki etc. are famous sweets associated with certain towns and cities.
The city of Belgaum too is known for a very famous sweet called kunda. Its origin according to most sources dates back to about 64 years ago when a Rajasthani by name Gajanan Mithaiwale belonging to a Purohit family once over boiled milk which turned into a dark brown paste. Not willing to waste and throw it, (read “marwadi”) he experimented by mixing it with “khoa” which is essentially a milk paste used in most sweets and sugar to dilute. The resulting product was a sweet dish which tasted different and was quite delicious. Not knowing what to name his new discovery, he uttered “kunda”. Since then this product is being prepared by most of the sweet making families for commercial sale.
