The peculiarity of the choice of words and themes of songs in Hindi films will probably never cease to surprise. As we continue to unearth more and more unheard songs, we continue to come across songs that will make one wonder and bring a laugh at the same time. Looking for something else, I bumped into this song just a little while ago. I had not heard this song before. And in just one listen, I am completely bowled over.

In old Hindi movies, especially those of 1950s and 1960s, we often see songs picturised on “Taanga”, also called “Tonga”, not to be confused with a country of this name. 🙂

“Taanga” was actually a mode of public transport in India those days. With time, Taanga has all but vanished as a mode of public transport in India. But they have not become extinct. One can still find them in some small towns of India. I have noticed them in small places in Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh etc. In fact, one can see them in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra in UP. I recall that we (I, my wife and daughter) actually rode on a Taanga to go to Fatehpur Sikri a few years ago.

The film is a social drama produced under the banner of Super Pictures, Bombay and is produced and directed by Aspi Irani. And so, yesterday as I was conversing back and forth with Harish ji Raghuvanshi (resident of Surat, compiler of the ‘Mukesh Geet Kosh’) regarding information on the lyricist SH Behari, we started to discuss the general topic of hugely talented lyricists that spent a very small time in the industry, contributed a small number of very wonderful songs and then somehow did not work anymore for Hindi films. The year – 1997. For the first time ever (October ’97), an Indian artist is being honored as the ‘Artist of the Month’ by MTV channel on cable TV. At the age of 64, a Maharashtrian housewife who loves to cook, and is a grandmother, Asha Bhosle graced the honors. And mind you, this recognition is voted for by the MTV audience, a population that primarily consists of teen agers. At an age when most people in many walks of life are either retired or contemplating a more relaxed and sedate life, this diva of Hindi film music, went on to completely reinvent herself. At the age of 64, with a new makeover, she rose once again to become the queen of funky pop.
