When this song Khit pit khit karey aur kat kat ke girey was shared, it immediately reminded me of another song which I had heard during 1985-86 either on radio or in the collection of the music centre which I used to visit daily evening during those days.

It is time to get on with the series and to finish it. Or it will soon be the day of Rafi sahab’s Birth Anniversary, if I keep dwelling on how to start a post and what to write in it. I have written 24 posts so far in this series and running out of steam. Or ideas-after all how much small talk one can indulge in, given the by and large, one way dialogue of this series. There is no doubt about it, that I have enjoyed doing this series.

According to Wikipedia, “Born in 1926, Lakshmi Shankar started her career in dancing. In 1939, when Uday Shankar brought his dance troupe to Madras, (recently renamed Chennai), she joined the Almora Centre to learn Uday Shankar’s dance style based on the Indian classics, and became a part of his troupe. It is said that Prabaht Films’ ‘Amrit Manthan’ (1934) has the distinction of having songs in ghazal format for the first time. I found that there were 3 songs in this film in ghazal format written by Veer Mohammed Puri. I had never heard of the name of this lyricist (or poet). So the curiosity led me to make a search for his name in websites. Unfortunately, I could not get much information about the lyricist except a hint that he was a poet which I guessed from a ghazal ‘kamsini mein dil pe gham ka bhaar kyon’ from the same film that he had used ‘Veer’ as his takhallus (alias) in the maqta (last she’r) of the ghazal.

Two years have passed. Well, almost, just about two weeks short. It was another cool night of November that I was busy typing the write up for the 5000th song on this blog. There was much exhilaration and excitement that the 5000th milestone was reached. There were some very cautious and guarded comments, pointing towards the 10,000th song. But at that time, although the 5000th was already capped, the 10,000th still seemed daunting and unthinkable. That was two years ago.
