When one talks of star pairings during the golden era of Hindi movies, one thinks of “A grade” star pairings like Raj Kapoor-Nargis, Dilip Kumar- Madhubala, Dilip Kumar-Meena Kumari, Dev Anand- Waheeda Rehman etc. But there were other pairs too, that would be signed up by smaller budget movie makers, like for instance, Ashok Kumar- Nirupa Roy, Kishore Kumar-Vyjyanti Mala etc.

Aa ha, close to midnight, and we are at the Yippeee-ing hour once again. And the film that we are inviting into the yippeee-land tonight is ‘Hongkong’ from 1962.
There are many films that have taken us to foreign lands, and even around the world. But I am sure you will agree, that the film that has the most songs about foreign places, is this one. Let us just examine – first we have two important cities of south east Asia covered in the song – “Hongkong China Mina Singapore”. Then we have three nations from Africa, covered in the song “Kenya Uganda Tanganika”. An then, in yet one more sojourn abroad, we are taken to visit the Hawaii islands in the song in this post “Hono Lu Lu, Hono Lu Lu, Honolulu, Honolulu”. I am sure, outside of the film ‘Around The World’ (1967), in all probability, it is this film that covers the maximum number of foreign locations in its songs.

Today (16 january 2018) is the 92nd birth anniversary of O P Nayyar (16 january 1926- 28 january 2007).
Instead of discussing his biography and discussing his well known songs, I have decided to pay my tribute to the legendary music director by presenting his full filmography for Hindi movies here.
In summary, O P Nayyar composed music for 73 Hindi movies from 1952 to 1995. He composed 569 songs in these movies. The blog has 462 songs from these movies. 69 out of 73 movies are represented in the blog. Out of these movies represented in the blog, 47 movies are already YIPPEED. So we now have to look for just the remaining 26 movies to look for the balance 107 songs. We are very much in the last lap as far as covering all available O P Nayyar songs in the blog is concerned.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’ से ‘ह’ तक (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 3

‘इ’ – इस जग में कहीं भी रहियो
मेरी आवाज़ के पीछे चले आओ
चले आओ
चले आओ॰ ॰ ॰
Aah, only if it were possible in this physical world. The only recourse is to listen to the recordings. That charisma is going to remain alive, till the time there is music on this earth. The magic of Rafi Sb’s voice will never cease.

Now, none of the regulars can say they have not heard this song. In a film that boasts of more than one song that competes for the title of the best song in the film, this song surely is one of the best songs in this film. Wow – that sure is saying something for the quality of songs of this film. In 1962, music director Ravi has been active as an independent music director for about seven years now, and he already has about 30 films behind him, that he has composed for. His films include such notable hits as ‘Ek Saal’ (1957), ‘Dilli Ka Thug’ (1958), ‘Ghar Sansaar’ (1958), ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chaand’ (1960), ‘Ghunghat’ (1960), ‘Gharaana’ (1961), ‘Modern Girl’ (1961), ‘Bombay Ka Chor’ (1962) and many more. And then in 1962, out comes this Shammi Kapoor, Shakila, Helen starrer called ‘China Town’ – and the popular response is “Baar Baar Dekho, Hazaar Baar Dekho”. Oh yes, the songs of this film – one just does not feel done with them, no matter how many times you have heard them.
