#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————
(Remembrance Day – Mohd Rafi 31.07.2023)
—————————————————-

Today 31st July’2023 is the forty-forth ‘Remembrance Day’ of the legendary singer Mohd Rafi (born on 24.12.1924 and passed away on 31.07.1980).

We remember this ‘divine voice’ of Hindi Film Music today and pay our tributes to him on this blog.

I have mentioned it earlier that there have been many passionate, heartfelt, lovable posts on Rafi Saab in the past here on this blog and we will have many such posts in future as well. So, I am not going to write about Rafi Saab’s voice, his songs or his personality and the many incidences which have been known to us about his generosity and all. But I would like to mention something which is more than enough to mention how Rafi Saab has become a part of my life since I exist here on this ‘earth’.

Rafi Saab started his singing career in Hindi movies in 1945-46 or 1944-45. I was born in 1968, and if we leave the first three-four- or five years of my childhood or why, even they should be considered since Rafi Saab’s songs coming out of radio were still reaching my ears. When I was growing, his songs were with us all the time. We were listening, enjoying, singing and savoring this ‘divine voice’ which motivated, inspired, and even medicated our souls’ in this journey of our life. There are a host of emotions that we feel in our lives, and there were Rafi Saab’s song to express almost every one of the emotions that we felt in our lives. This voice takes ones to the ‘heights of meditation’ and the ‘highest spiritual experience’ if you are willing to ‘submerge’ yourself there.

What I want to mention here is that we grew up listening to his songs on the radio – ranging from the new songs from latest movies (in 1970s) as well as older songs from earlier movies. Gradually we become familiar with many Rafi gems that were created before my birth i.e. ‘1968’. For example songs like “Yahaan Badlaa Wafaa Ka Bewafaai Ke Siwaa Kya Hai from ‘Jugnu’ (1947) which I got to listen for the first time on All India Radio’s Urdu Service is one of my favorites. There are many more favorites of course. . .

I have already mentioned earlier that the very first song from a Hindi movie that I memorized by heart is “Suhaani Raat Dhal Chuki”. I was in 7th/8th standard at that time.
Even today I can sing it (sing?:) ) without looking at the the lyrics. There are many such songs of Rafi Saabs that are ‘kanthhast/zabaani yaad’ to me.

I vaguely remember reading the news of his death in newspaper and the pictures of his last journey where people flooded the roads in spite of the continuous rains.

Forty three years have passed since Mohammad Rafi left this world but his voice is with us. During these forty three years, we have explored and discovered many more of his songs, listening to them and savored them. It goes without saying that his voice will be with us throughout our life, and will be there with us even when it is time for us to breathe our last, may be with the accompaniment of the song “Chal Ud Jaa Re Panchhi” in the background.

On this occasion, I am presenting a song from a 1969 movie as my tribute. The song is from the movie ‘Badi Didi’ (1969). It was directed by Narendra Suri for Archana Films, Bombay. Narendra Suri was also co-producer of this movie with Nand Kumar. ‘Badi Didi’ had Nanda, Jeetendra, Om Prakash, Mahmood, Nazir Hussain, Raj Mehra, Aruna Irani, Dilip Raj, Padma, Jeevan, Leela Chitnis, Ulhas, Poornima and others.

This movie has six songs penned by Rajinder Krishan and composed by Ravi. Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle and Mohd Rafi are singers who had given playback to the songs of this movie. There is only one Rafi song in this movie which is a solo song. This song is available in two parts on online sources. Though, HFGK does not mention this song as a two part song. This movie is also available online but I have not yet watched it.

As mentioned above ‘Badi Didi’ was directed by Narendra Suri. I could gather some information about him. Narendra Suri marked his directorial debut with the movie ‘Begunaah’ (1957). He went on to directed ‘Laajwanti’ (1958), ‘Majboor’ (1964), ‘Purnima’ (1965), ‘Badi Didi’ (1969) and ‘Vandana’ (1975). He was also an associate director for the movie ‘Shikast’ (1953) which was directed by Ramesh Saigal. For ‘Badi Didi’ he was also a co-producer. He also produced and directed the movie ‘Vandana’.

The article on him (which I have mentioned below) mentions that his movies got noticed and earned limited success. Some of these movies had good songs and music. As far as I am concerned I remember to have watched the movie ‘Laajwanti’ on Doordarshan and I remember a couple of its songs as well. I am also aware of the songs of ‘Purnima’ though I do not remember if I have watched this movie. Narendra Suri is remembered mainly for the movie ‘Laajwanti’ (1958) and also ‘Begunaah’ (1957). The prints of ‘Begunah’ (1957) were destroyed as it was legally charged with plagiarism. It remains the only case of its kind so far in the history of Hindi Films (I hope I am correct). ‘Laajwanti’ (1958) bagged the National Award for Best Film in 1959 and it was also entered in the Cannes Film Festival of 1959 to compete for Best Feature Film.

Coming to today’s song, it is sung by Mohd Rafi. Lyrics are by Rajinder Krishan and music is composed by Ravi.

Let us listen to the song now savor the divine voice of Mohd Rafi.

So far, only one song from this movie has been posted on the blog and this song is the second song from this movie to be presented on the blog. This song is a short song available on audio only. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this song. I guess that this song gets played in the background in the movie.

Song-Kya kya rang dikhaaye zindagee (Badi Didi)(1969) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

aisi chali taqdeer ki aandhi ee
bikhar gaye ae ae sab tinkey
qismat ne is ghar se liye
hain badle ye kis din ke

kya kya rang dikhaaye zindagi
kya kya rang dikhaaye ae
kya kya rang dikhaaye zindagi
kya kya rang dikhaaye
kathhputli ki tarah
aadmi ko bhi naach nachaaye ae
kya kya rang dikhaaye zindagi
kya kya rang dikhaaye

sukh ke din jab beet gaye to
dukh ke bhi kat jaayenge
haar na himmat
gham ke parbat
raahon se hat jaayenge
kehte hain insaan usey jo
har thhokar sah jaaye ae
kya kya rang dikhaaye zindagi
kya kya rang dikhaaye

Tribute to Mohammad Rafi on 43rd death anniversary

We come to that day again, when the death anniversary of Rafi Sahab becomes the subject of talk, discussion, posts in the blog, awe-inspiring for learners and a deep-thinking day for die-hard fans like me.  As I grow older, the word ‘fan’ in this context sounds basic and amateur. Not that it is anything great for me to be a ‘fan’ per se, because I am but a speck on this mortal earth, whereas Rafi Sahab’s voice and songs have attained immortality.

We are 6 months away from the beginning of centenary year of Rafi Sahab.  There was only one Mohammed Rafi, he had no sibling, nobody could follow closely in his shadow, to constantly compete with.  No one to keep him on his toes, always threatening to overtake. No one could make him feel insecure, for he was a pious Khuda ka banda who had faith as a guiding light.  In his career of 35 years, he was able to take snubs or insults in his stride, with a smile, as he did the adulation and respect showered on him.   For the faith tells him that all izzat and zillat is from Almighty Allah. No one else has any ability to give anything to anybody, but Him.

In this materialistic era, it is very difficult to keep this sort of faith and belief, which gives total peace to the soul.  Rafi Sahab had that peaceful demeanor, which he always wore in his smile.

I remember a quote from a friend.  She said that Rafi Sahab has the aura or presence that emanates peace.  She said this when we were talking about him one day years ago.  It is only now I am trying to understand what she meant by that.  Rafi Sahab was not a threat to anybody, nor could he feel threatened by anybody.   He expected nothing as his due from people and he was forever grateful for whatever barakah he received.   And he pointed to the sky and said – “sab uparwale ki den hai”.   These 5 words uttered in so low a voice that it will not register, if the listener was not concentrating, intent on absorbing every word.

Lata Mangeshkar has said in interviews about him that – “bahut shaleen svabhaav ke the, un ko gussa kabhi nahi aata thha”.  There are many artists and others who worked with him and knew him, have said similar things.

Now let’s move to some research and analysis on the phenomena called Rafi Sahab.

A few days ago, this post appeared in the blog “Tore Kurte Se Tohra Tan Jhalke“. Mahesh ji has raised some questions in the post vis-à-vis Mukesh-Naushad, Rafi-Naushad and Mukesh-Lata-Naushad. While reading the post, my first thought was, hey. . . Naushad had Mukesh sing for Rajendra Kumar in ‘Saathi’.  Then came the next thought – maybe it was almost two decades later after Andaaz.  The table giving the list of songs confirmed it.

Naushad (1940-2004) 540 64 movies (593)

As can be seen above, Naushad’s score is 593 songs in 64 movies in a career spanning more than 60 years.  It averages to more than 9 songs per movie.  Even at the top of his career, he was doing 2-3 films per year in 50’s which trickled down to 1-2 in 60’s. In the 40’s too he was less prolific.  19, 10 and 9 songs of GM Durrani, Shyam Kumar and Surendra respectively, were almost all in the 40’s.  GM Durrani had one song in ‘Deedar’.  By this time not just Mukesh, but all the others were out of the picture for Naushad, including the great Saigal. Similarly, Naushad had pretty much replaced everyone else (including Shamshad Begum) with Lata Mangeshkar by early 50’s.   What could be the reason for Rafi ending up with only 159 songs for Naushad, despite being his only choice as male singer, throughout 50’s and 60’s?  The explanation for this is that the era of 40’s and 50’s the films had more female songs than male ones.  Then who is most prolific singer for Naushad?  The answer is Lata Mangeshkar with highest number of songs with 200-250 songs, or more at a guess.

Then Mahesh ji answered his own question in the comments with this statement 🙂 – “I think Naushad would have avoided Mukesh in any case as in Rafi he found an irreplaceable singer apt for his compositions and the discipline and manners that he expected.”

And Naushad is not in isolation, as far as his preference for Rafi Sahab is concerned, as his sole male singer.  There are scores of composers including Madan Mohan, Ravi, Chitragupt, C Ramchandra, Roshan, Hansraj Behl, Husnlal Bhagatram, OPN, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Shankar Jaikishan, SD Burman and RD Burman, among others.   All of them ended up with movies which had only Rafi as the male playback singer.  People say SDB was partial to Kishore Kumar, but I say he was partial to Rafi, and in many movies, he had Rafi sing for Dev Anand. Dev Anand’s friendship with Kishore Kumar is well known, but SDB was getting full scores by Rafi on Dev Anand, even when Kishore Kumar was giving playback only to Dev Anand.  The celebrated ‘Guide’ is only one part of it.

The superstar Rajesh Khanna was never known to be partial to Kishore Kumar at least he did not put pressure on Laxmikant Pyarelal to have only Kishore Kumar as his playback singer.  He was the superstar, he could have dictated anything, but he did not. In this way Rajesh Khanna favoured Rafi Sahab, when the maestro’s career was at a low point.

Another point raised by Mahesh ji is about the duets that were not composed by Naushad with Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar.  Only such duet is in ‘Sunehra Sansaar’ 1975. But Naushad was not known for composing many duets, though I see 4 duets with Shamshad in ‘Mela’ (1948).  But otherwise, Naushad composed few duets of even Rafi-Lata. One can try to put Mukesh’s voice in any of the Rafi solos and duets composed by Naushad, with the help of AI and see the results. Purely as a matter of interest and study, not to make any point here.

Through 1950’s Naushad’s compositions were based on Hindustani classical, for which Rafi’s classical training was a plus point.  Or rather, because he had Rafi Sahab to deliver them, Naushad could compose such classics.

As I said above, there were music directors, who stuck to Rafi, there being other talented and specialist genre singers available, because in him and with him they found freedom to create songs, without fear or worry of whether the song  would turn out well, or the singer will be able to perform the song as imagined. Their creativity demanded that they make the most of Rafi Sahab’s versatile gifted abilities. Then there were those, whose egos got the better of them and they denied this fact and avoided Rafi Sahab, only to go into exile or to be sidelined by their close ones in the film music circles. These very same people came full circle decades later to get Rafi sahab to sing for them. There was Khaiyyam, whose debut movie had superlative Rafi solos, who could not /or would not continue with him.  It was Rafi Sahab who requested Khaiyyam to record those non-film songs.

There are a few talented persons even today, who are singing his songs all over the world and making vlogs about those songs, and they refrain from taking Rafi Sahab’s name, when discussing and explaining those songs and their murkiyan and they teach technique to make it easy for the new learners to grasp the nuances.  So be it, who are we to begrudge them their choices and their ways of earning a livelihood.

For this anniversary post, I am presenting a simple rendition of Anand Bakshi’s poetry, composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal for the film ‘Mera Dost’ (1969).   The lyrics are meaningful, and they remind me of my own poem/ghazal which I wrote last year.   I gave it the title “Ibrat” which means “a lesson well learned and remembered” in my own dictionary.  It is one of those words whose meaning Google cannot fully understand.

عبرت

Ibrat

main kuchh chahti hoon likhna ibaadat ki tarah se

gar kuchh na kahun to kya kahun aye Khudaa
jo teer sa nikle par ta’abeer ho khwaab ki tarah se

ishq paida huaa to aashiq chala bazaar tak
ke gair ko le jaaunga gairat ki tarah se

gawaahi deti hai taareekh zindaan ki deewaron par
tu sun to zara is ko ibrat ki tarah se

aankhen hon kabootar ki aur labon ko si le
jo tujhe nakaam shohrat lage izzat ki tarah se

dost tujhe jo chahiye chheen le mujh se
par wa’ada hai adaa tu hi karega qeemat ki tarah se

This is just amateurish poetry and I feel too embarrassed to show them to a Ustad. It is my creativity and its 100% amateur, but original. The millennials are taking to free style poetry like a storm.  So, I am also joining their throngs 🙂 .

Back to Rafi Sahab and the song.  A song made special by the mere rendering of it by Rafi Sahab.  Note how every word is infused with meaning and how many variations the word  ‘Ae’ is given, in stanza’s and in repetition of mukhda.   No wonder, the musicians are still missing him, 43 years after he left this faani duniya.  His brand of integrity and humility is rare and in short supply forever.

un safīnoñ kī tabāhī meñ hai ibrat kā sabaq
jo kināre tak pahuñch kar nazr-e-tūfāñ ho gaye

(Mahfuzur Rahman Adil)

(Editor’s note: With this song, Anand Bakshi, silently and unnoticeably completes 1200 songs in the blog as a lyricist.)

Song – Ae Dost Kisi Roz Tu Pachhtaayega (Mera Dost) (1969) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Anand Bakshi, MD – Laxmikant Pyaarelal

Lyrics

ae dost kisi roz tu pachhtaaega
ae dost kisi roz tu pachhtaaega
jo aag se khelega wo jal jaaega
ae dost kisi roz tu pachhtaaega
ae dost kisi roz tu pachhtaaega

mat bhool badi bhool kiye jaata hai
mat bhool badi bhool kiye jaata hai
jo dard tu auron ko diye jaata hai
wo dard tere dil ko bhi tadpaaega
ae dost kisi roz tu pachhtaaega
ae dost kisi roz tu pachhtaaega

daulat ka nasha hosh udaa deta hai
daulat ka nasha hosh udaa deta hai
insaan ko deewana banaa deta hai
yeh jam utthaaya to behak jaaega
ae dost kisi roz tu pachhtaaega
ae dost kisi roz tu pachhtaaega
jo aag se khelega wo jal jaaega
ae dost kisi roz tu pachhtaaega

royega tu tadpega pareshan hoga aa
royega tu tadpega pareshan hoga aa
aur apne kiye pe tu pashemaan hoga
par haath gaya waqt nahi aaega
ae dost kisi roz tu pachhtaaega
ae dost kisi roz tu pachhtaaega

dekha na wahi baat hui saudaayi
dekha na wahi baat hui saudaayi
yeh paap ki daulat tere kis kaam aayi
tu apni khataaon ki sazaa paaega
ae dost kisi roz tu pachhtaaega
ae dost kisi roz tu pachhtaaega

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
———————————————————————
Today’s song is from the movie ‘Bandish’ from 1969.

I was not aware of this song till 2018 when I took up to present a write-up on singer Jaspal Singh for the song “Jin Khoja Tin Paayian Gehre Paani Paith” from the movie ‘Paayal Ki Jhankaar’ (1980) which was posted on the blog on 02.04.2018. This article is a part of the series I am presenting on the ‘special voices of the seventies’ and Jaspal Singh is one of those voices. So far I have presented nine posts in this series and there are more yet to come in the future.

Jaspal Singh is the singer of today’s song. Let us first go through his journey in Bollywood which I had mentioned in the above post. Since this background is necessary for today’s post also. I am reproducing below, the edited text from the above mentioned post of 02.04.2018.

Jaspal Singh was born on 23rd March 1943 in Amritsar, Punjab. (However on all official records his date of birth had been recorded as 28th March 1943). His father was running a hotel and their hotel was once situated just opposite to the famous Golden Temple in Amritsar’. Their hotel was later demolished and was compensated for by the government, as mentioned by him in his interview on RSTV-Guftagoo. He is one of five siblings – four brothers and one sister, again as per his interview on RSTV-Guftagoo.

Jaspal Singh completed his graduation from Amritsar and later on persuaded LLB from Ghaziabad. However, he was neither interested in business nor doing the advocacy. His only interest was to sing and become a play back singer which his mother and sister supported well. Since his childhood he was fond of singing and he was singing in his school and college functions and was popular among his circles in Amritsar. He was also been invited for singing in functions. He too, like other upcoming singers, was a great fan of Rafi Saab whom he admires a lot. Later on he got a chance to sing with Rafi Saab in films which was a great day for him.

His journey to movies and becoming a play back singer was full of hard work and struggle and he succeeded only because he had this talent, passion and instinct to become a play back singer for movies. It so happened that his sister got married and was settled in Bombay (now Mumbai). This came like a blessing for young Jaspal Singh who thereafter kept visiting Bombay, initially during the summer vacations and thereafter more often, to fulfill his dream of becoming a playback singer for movies.

His sister, knowing about his passion and intentions, persuaded her husband to try that Jaspal Singh gets an opportunity to sing in movies. Their continued efforts resulted in Usha Khanna ji giving him his first break for playback singing in 1969, in the movie ‘Bandish’. His first recorded song was a solo song “Dekho Logo Ye Kaisa Zamaana”, which went quite unnoticed.

Usha Khanna ji give him another chance in 1969 to sing in the movie ‘Anjaan Hai Koi’, this time a duet with Mahendra Kapoor which due to its tune and words was somewhat noticed and reach a larger audience. I have presented this duet of Mahendra Kapoor and Jaspal Singh from ‘Anjaan Hai Koi’ on the blog on 01.02.2023, which is “Beta Khel Mat Matka“.

In today’s post I am going to present the first song sung by Jaspal Singh for Hindi films which went unnoticed then. For this song Jaspal Singh was credit with his original name i.e. Jaspal Singh Phokela.

‘Bandish’ (1969) was directed by Charandas Shokh for JJ Films, Bombay. It had Sonia Sahni, Shailendra, Azra, Ulhas, Brahmachari, Shyam Kumar, Sarita Devi, SK Prem, Mirza Musharraf, Uma Dhawan, Sushma, Kundan, Dhanraj, Habib, Madhumati, Manmohan and others.

This movie has six songs composed by Usha Khanna. Akmal Hyderabadi is the lyricist of the songs in this movie. Asha Bhonsle, Krishan Kalle, Mohd Rafi, and Jaspal Singh (as Jaspal Phokela) are singers for the songs in this movie. Two songs from this movie have been posted on the blog earlier.

Here is the brief about the story of this movie as mentioned by Shri Arunkumar ji in his comments on the song “Jaaiye Jaaiye Huzoor, Aapko Kis Ne Roka Hai” of this movie posted on the blog earlier.

The story of this film is about CID Inspector Anand, who is a courageous, loyal and is devoted to elimination of traitors of the country. I thought this was CBI’s job, but the producers of this film firmly believed that CID does this work. Anand is sent abroad to many countries and returns victorious every time after eliminating traitors. But the supply of traitors is in plenty in India, hence he is appointed now in India.

He meets Shabnam in a train journey and becomes involved with her. The traitors kidnap Shabnam (why her?) and Anand and they are brought to Lobo’s den. He wants secret information from Anand. That time Anand realizes that Shabnam is their accomplice. He escapes from there and finds out that Shabnam’s father is held by the traitors. After few reels, Anand, as expected, traces the culprits, arrests them and also captures Shabnam. Culprits are handed over to the police and Shabnam, he keeps for himself!

Now coming to the hero of this movie i.e. Shailendra. Here we need to correct ourselves and replace the information about him as mentioned in the song ‘”Abhi To Raat Baaqi Hai“, as there seems to be the ‘same name confusion’ about two different actors named Shailendra.

The lead actor Shailendra in this movie ‘Bandish’ is actually Parduman or Praduman Singh Randhawa. He is the son of Dara Singh from his first wife Bachno Kaur. He was born on 12th April 1946. Dara Singh wanted his eldest son to become a wrestler like him. However Praduman was interested in films.

He was a co-producer of the movie ‘Nasihat’ (1967) with Saudagar. This movie was a home production of Dara Singh where his brother Randhawa was also the actor.

Praduman then appeared in movies like ‘Aankhen’ (1968) (where he played the role of Akram) and ‘Ganga Tera Paani Amrit’ (1971) (where he played the role of Ballu, a friend of Shatrughan Sinha) where he was credited as Parduman.

He handled the publicity of the movie ‘Isi Ka Naam Duniya Hai’ (1962) (with DR Bhonsle and Chandu).* He also worked as title designer for ‘Hare Kaanch Ki Chooriyaan’ (1967) and as a title artist for the movie ‘Upkaar’ (1967).*
*(This information is confirmed from the titles of these three movies)

It is later in ‘Bandish’ that he changed his name for screen as Shailendra. It seems that he quit the film industry later and settled down as a farmer at Meerut (UP). He has two sons and a daughter.

In this regard I would like to mention that the information about Praduman Sing Randhawa mentioned in ‘Wikipedia’ is more authentic in my view compared to other many sources where they have even included the movie ‘Teesri Kasam’ (1966) and many other movies considering him as ‘Shailendra’. However I would request knowledgeable readers to add additional information about him and correct us wherever required. Our dear Prakash ji had mentioned in his comments on the song of ‘Ganga Tera Paani Amrit’ about guessing this person with Shatrughan Sinha as Parduman Randhawa long back.

Well, now coming to today’s song which on screen is performed by the actor–comedian Brahmachari.

I tried to look for detailed information about his journey to films. But sadly there is no biographical information about Brahmachari available as of now. We checked with many sources but as of now only the following information can be presented here.

Born as Murari Lal Vashishtha, Brahmachari started his film career with the movie ‘Dus Lakh’ (1966). He went on to act over one hundred and fifty movies (as per filmography available on internet/YouTube link). We have seen him in many movies e.g. ‘Ek Naari Ek Brahmachari’ (1971), ‘Mere Jeevan Saathi’ (1972), ‘Ek Mahal Ho Sapnon Ka’ (1975), ‘Fakeera’ (1976), ‘Ek Se Badh Kar Ek’ (1976), ‘Kaalia’ (1981) etc. I am not mentioning complete list here in this post. ‘Kaali Topi Laal Roomal’ from the year 2000 is said to be his last movie.

Actor Brahmachari has two sons and a daughter. Both of his sons are famous actor i.e. Puneet Vashishtha and Harsh Vashishtha. His daughter’s name is Renu Sharma. Sunaina Vashishtha is the wife of Brahmachari.

Actor Brahmachari passed away on 1st August’2001. This is mentioned by his son Puneet in his comment on the above ‘YouTube’ link.

Let us now listen to today’s song where Brahmachari is lip syncing for the voice of Jaspal Singh. Also seen in picturisation are many beautiful ladies whom I am unable to identify. That also reminds me of the well-known song “Rekha O Rekha Jab Se Tumhe Dekhapicturised on Brahmachari and Tabassum in the movie ‘Adhikaar’ (1971). I am not aware if he got to perform any other songs too. I think there may be a few more. I request our knowledgeable readers to help add more songs picturised on Brahmachari.

Over to the today’s song now. This song  is a nice song to listen to and watch too. The video of the song has three stanzas whereas the audio has one stanza less. The location of the picturisation of this song looks like Mumbai’s Taj Hotel, Gateway of India,  and around the sea and other locations in Mumbai.

Hullo Atuldom

Hemanta Mukhopadhyay a.k.a. Hemant Kumar was a music director/ singer whose career spanned from the late 1930s (not sure about this, am open to being corrected) to 1989. He was fond of singing & music is said to have quit academics to focus on a career in music.(detailed biography is available in this post by our Sudhirji) .

His first film song was in Bengali under S D Burman’s music direction. His first film as music director was also in Bengali. He is said to have moved to Mumbai at the behest of Hemen Gupta who called upon Hemant Kumar to compose music for his (Hemen Gupta’s) Hindi directorial debut ‘Anandmath’ in 1951. I am sure that there are many followers of this blog who know about Hemant Kumar’s musical journey which began in Bengali films and spread to other languages like Odia, Marathi, Gujarati, Assamese, Tamil, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Konkani, Sanskrit, Urdu in addition to Hindi films. He has sung many non-film songs, & was an exponent of Rabindra Sangeet and perhaps the most sought after male singer. His velvet voice was extensively used as playback for Uttam Kumar (in Bengali), Dev Anand, Sunil Dutt, Pradeep kumar etc (in Hindi).

The blog has 320 of his Hindi songs as music director, 228 (including 8 of his NFS) of his 322 as singer. All these I am mentioning are only from Hindi films, his numbers from other languages- I am unaware of.

For this post, remembering him on his 103rd birth anniversary, we shall have a song from the 1969 released “Raahgeer” (also written as “Rahgir”). This was a movie that was produced by Hemant Kumar under the banner of his Geetanjali Pictures. It was directed by Tarun Majumdar had music by Hemant Kumar (himself) and Gulzar was the lyricist. Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar, Aarti Mukherjee, Sulakshana Pandit, & Hemantda as the playback singers. Biswajit, Sandhya Roy, Nirupa Roy, Shashikala, Kanhaiyalal, Iftikaar etc in the cast. There were 10 songs in the film and the following six are already on the blog.

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
———————————————————————

I was not aware of this movie “Pyaar-1969”. I do not remember to have read about it or listened to its’ songs earlier. It is only now that through this blog and the Geet Kosh I become aware of this movie.

“Pyaar-1969” was directed by Pralhad Sharma for ‘Film Makers, Calcutta’. It had Soma Salkar, Sooraj, Sangeeta, Prem, Kavita, Shekhar, Alka, Jahar Rai, Baby Samli Rai, Pandit Natwar and others.

It seems that this must be an obscure movie of its time.

“Pyaar-1969” has six songs which were written by Pralhad Sharma who was also the director of this movie.

Music for this movie was composed by V. Balsara.

Here is the list of songs in this movie:-

“Pyaar-1969” made its debut on the blog on 13.03.2019 wherein a song from this movie was presented by our Shri Sudhir ji, and so far that remains the only song from this movie presented on the blog.

Today I present the second song from this movie which is sung by Aarti Mukherjee.

Let us listen to this song which is a ‘naagin’ and ‘sapera’ song. This song seems to be of lesser heard or never heard category of song. (I was listening to it for the first time).

Only audio of this song is available.

I would request knowledgeable readers to add more information about this movie and its songs.

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
———————————————————————

“Surya Devta-1969” was directed by Sharad Desai for ‘Alice Pictures, Bombay’. It had Nirupa Roy, Ashish Kumar, Manimala, Sapru, Jeevan, Shekhar, Amrut Patel, Sarita Khatau, P. Kailash, Sarita Devi, Shukla, Dalpat, Bhoj Kumar, Kapoor and others.

This movie has six songs composed by Avinash Vyas. The movie had two lyricsts viz. Bharat Vyas and Madan.

HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1969) mentions lyricist’s name for four individual songs which are all written by Madan. Singer’s name is also mentioned for these four songs only. Lyricist’s name and singer’s name are not mentioned for the remaining two songs .

Here is the list of songs in this movie:-

SNo Song Title Lyricist Singer/s Posted On

04 O chanda re chhup jaanaa Not known Not known
05 Pyaar ka dukh se bharaa sansaar Madan Mahendra Kapoor
06 Dheere bol bairan paayaliyaa Madan Suman Kalyanpur

“Surya Devta-1969” made its debut on the blog on 29.03.2019, wherein its’ song ‘o bedardi jaane de’ was presented by Shri Sudhir ji. I guess that the songs of this movie were not available those days. The song that was covered was also uploaded by Shri Sudhir ji. However, now, I could locate four songs of this movie on internet including the one already posted on the blog. That leaves us with two songs where the lyricist (I guess it should be Bharat Vyas) and singer is not known, that are unavailable even now.

Today I present the second song from this movie which is a ‘male-melancholic’ song sung by Mahendra Kapoor. From the lyrics we can guess that this guy has either been betrayed in love or lost his love to other person’. 🙂

Lyrics are by Madan and music is composed by Avinash Vyas.

Only audio of the song is available.

Let us listen to this song now…

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
———————————————————————

The song in this post is from the movie ‘Apna Khoon Apna Dushman-1969’.

I do not remember to have heard the title of this movie or its songs in the past. Of late, I have been coming across many movies from the sixties where I am not aware either of the movie or it’s’ songs or both.

“Apna Khoon Apna Dushman-1969” was directed by Kamran for ‘Rainbow Films, Bombay’.

It was a ‘social genre’ movie as mentioned in HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970). This movie was passed by Censor Board on 07.10.1969.

The cast of this movie included Dara Singh, Sanjana, Kamran, Tiwari, Maruti, Meenakshi, Mumtaz Begam, Habib, Anjum, Dilip Dutt, Tun Tun, Fazal Khan, Khurshid Khan, and Shyam Kumar and others.

Dialogues for this movie were written by Farooque Qaisar who also wrote the lyrics for the songs of this movie.

Music for this movie was composed by Lala-Sattar.

This movie has four songs as per details given below.

SNo Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Tumhaari chaand si soorat pe hamko Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi 19.11.2011
02 Na aaya hamen pyaar karnaa na aaya Asha Bhonsle
03 Dilrubaa na sataa aa bhi jaa Asha Bhonsle
04 Chhappan chhuri hai mera naam Asha Bhonsle, Usha Timothi

This movie ‘Apna Khoon Apna Dushman-1969’ had made its debut on the blog on 19.11.2011. So far, that song remains the only song from this movie to be covered on the blog.

Today, let us listen to the second song from this movie. This song is a female duet song sung by Asha Bhonsle and Usha Timothi.

From the video of this song available on internet it is clear that this song is the last song to appear in the movie before the climax of the movie. I have not watched this movie but it seems to be a regular movie with ‘good vs. evil’ theme where the ‘good’ prevails in the end and the evil is defeated.

In the picturisation of the song almost the whole cast of this movie can be seen present. I am unable to identify the actresses performing on this song.
I would request knowledgeable readers to help identify these actresses.

As mentioned above today’s song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Usha Timothi. Lyrics are by Farooque Qaisar and music is composed by Lala-Sattar.

Let us now enjoy the song …

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————

“Samay Bada Balwaan-1969” was directed by Sohrab Modi for ‘Minerva, Bombay’.

It had Sohrab Modi, Mehtab, Shailesh Kumar, Shahida, Aruna Irani, David, Manto and others. It was a social drama film.

Here is a brief about this movie mentioned by Shri Arunkumar ji in his comment on this song ‘bhooley afsaane phir se yaad aaye’, which was presented by Shri Sudhir ji on the blog.

SAMAY BADA BALWAN-1969 was a film from a Balwan film co. and a Balwan Producer/Director. The message of the film was ‘Time is a great Healer. Time is a great leveller’.
Uttam (Sohrab Modi) and Damayanti (Mehtab) is a rich and happy couple with everything in their favour, but suddenly a raging fire destroys everything that this rich cotton growing merchant had and they beco0me poor in their big Haveli.
Uttam’s younger brother Ram (Sailesh Kr.) is engaged to Gauri (Shahida) the elder daughter of Seth Dhunichand (Wasti), who breaks the engagement.
His brother-in-law (Damayanti’s brother) Dwarakadas (K.N.Singh) leaves his partnership, and joins his rival. His son Baloo (Pravin) is engaged to Dhunichand’s second daughter.
On the insistence of his wife, Uttam goes for the engagement program, but there he is accused of theft of 5000 rupees and beaten by Dwaraka’s goons, when he is on his way home etc etc.
Within few years, Uttam and his son build their empire again, but Dwaraka and Dhunichand become poor, thus establishing that Time teaches to value every relationship irrespective of money..blah…blah…blah.
Despite being a Sohrab Modi film, somehow the public could not digest the overdose of Updesh of Morality much and the film went to its rest-house very soon.

“Samay Bada Balwaan-1969” had eight songs in it. Lyrics for all the eight songs were written by Dina Nath Madhok and music was composed by Usha Khanna.

I am giving below the list of songs contained in this movie:-

SNo Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Bhoole afsaane phir se yaad aaye Mohd Rafi 23.10.2011
02 Yoon na dekho hamen pyaar aayega Asha Bhonsle
03 Teri tasveer se aankhen meri Asha, Rafi 25.10.2011
04 Roothh kar tum bhalaa yoon kahaan jaaoge Asha Bhonsle
05 Dekho chhalla milaa nishaani Krishna Kalle
06 Dil mein dhadkan la par haay Usha Khanna, Hemlata
07 Waqt zaalim hai kisi ko nahin chhoda isne… samay badaa balwaan Not mentioned
08 Ek do teen, ye mehzabeen tum-sa haseen Not mentioned

HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970) mentions Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Hemlata, Krishna Kalle and Usha Khanna as playback singers for this movie.

This movie seems to be an obscure movie as none of its videos are available on internet as of now.

So far, two songs from this movie have been posted on the blog in the year 2011.

Today we are going to listen to the third song from this movie which is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Lyrics are by D.N. Madhok and music is composed by Usha Khanna.

Only the audio of this song is available.

Over to the song now…

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————

Today’s song is from the ‘1969’ movie ‘Sambandh’.

This movie had made its debut on the blog long back on 19.07.2009. However it still remains unYIPPEED.

“Sambandh-1969” had as many as twelve songs in it, all penned by Kavi Pradeep.

Today 6th February’ 2023 is one hundred and eighth birth anniversary of Kavi Pradeep (6 February 1915 – 11 December 1998).

As a tribute to him on this occasion, I present a song from this movie ‘Sambandh-1969’.

Lyrics for the song were sent by Prakashchandra for the ‘BTYC challenge’ of this movie when it was due in ‘2019’.

“Sambandh-1969” was directed by Ajay Biswas for ‘S.M.F. Syndicate Productions, Bombay’.

It had Deb Mukherji, Anjana, Pradeep Kumar, Anita Dutt, Sulochana, Vijaya Chaudhary, Achala Sachdev, Abhi Bhattacharya, Nana Palsikar, Ulhas, Leela Mishra, Rani, Janaki Das, Manik Dutt, Sajjan and others.

This movie was based on Bangla Novel ‘Pratham Prem’ by Achintya Kumar Sengupta.

This movie had twelve songs written by Kavi Pradeep and composed by O.P. Nayyar.

Here is the list of all songs from this movie as mentioned in HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970).

(*only the video link contains Hemant Kumar`s aalaap at the starting of the song)

Today’s song is the penultimate song from this movie to be posted on the blog.

It is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and on screen it is Deb Mukherji lip-syncing this song. This song is a party song. Deb Mukherji is grief-stricken and on insistence by his family members and Anjana Mumtaz he comes up with this song. The humming in the starting of this song is in the voice of Hemant Kumar which is performed on screen by Pradeep Kumar whom Deb Mukherji is remembering before singing his part.

Also seen in the picturisation of this song are Abhi Bhattacharya, Achala Sachdev, Nana Palsikar, Anjana Mumtaz, Raani, Vijaya Choudhary, Milon Mukherji and others.

Lyrics of the song were sent by Prakashchandra.

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————
# Remembering Mohan Choti #
——————————————-——————————

Today 1st February’2023 is the thirty-first ‘remembrance anniversary’ of yesteryears’ comedian actor, and producer-director Mohan Choti. He passed away on this day in 1992. His date of birth is not known and sources mentioned his year of birth as 1935 and some mentioned it as 1942.

Mohan Choti’s life story has been full of struggle, followed by successful in films in ‘comic-role’, but finally ending in pain and suffering.

He started his film career by doing small roles in movies like ‘Devdas-1955’, ‘Parivaar-1956’ and ‘Musaafir-1957’ where he was first noticed and got his famous name ‘Mohan Choti’.

He got famous and became popular with his role in the movie ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi-1958’.

Later he played important roles in movies like ‘Dil Tera Deewaana-1962’, ‘Raakhi-1962’ etc. However by the end of sixties he ended up getting smaller comic roles only.

Later on he turned producer and director with the movie ‘Dhoti, Lota Aur Chaupaati-1975’ and ‘Hunterwaali-1977’ both of which didn’t fare well at the box office and he has to suffer financially from which he was never able to recover. He kept getting ‘comic roles’ in movies though and his last movie was ‘Muqaddar Ka Baadshaah-1990’.

He passed away on 01.02.1992. He was forgotten by the film industry people in his last days and was he was struggling on financial front.
(Brief about Mohan Choti is based on an article on him from Sanjit Narvekar’s book ‘Eena Meena Deeka: The Story of Hindi Film Comedy’, courtesy our Shri. Arunkumar Deshmukh ji.).

Today we pay our tributes to Mohan Choti on his ‘Remembrance Day’ by listening to and watching a song picturised on him from the ‘1969’ movie ‘Anjaan Hai Koi’.

“Anjaan Hai Koi-1969” was directed by Babubhai Mistry for ‘Anand Films’.

It had Feroz Khan, Nalini, Aruna Irani, Helen, Mohan Choti, Tiwari, Jayshree Talpade, Kundan, Uma Dutt, Noorjahaan, Suraj, Rakesh and others.

Today’s song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Jaspal Singh. Mohan Choti and another actor (I am forgetting his name) are seen performing on this song.

Both Mohan Choti and his friend have lost money while in ‘sattaa or matkaa’. They have even spend their salary in ‘matkaa’ in greed of more money, but lost all. So they wish to make aware people ‘not to play matkaa and lose money’ on it.

Lyrics for the song are written by Sardar Bikaneri and music is composed by Usha Khanna.

Let us now listen to this song…

Both

Lyrics

matkaa aa
haay re
haay re ae
matkaa aa

beta khel mat matkaa
beta khel mat matkaa
matke mein jo dil atka
to pad jaayega phatkaa
beta khel mat matkaa
ho o o o o o
beta khel mat matkaa

toone apni saari kamaayi
matke hi mein ganwaayi
o toone apni saari kamaayi
matke hi mein ganwaayi
arey ab to aaja
seedhe raste
sun le mere bhaai

ho jaayega mushkil jeenaa
pad jaayega aansoon peena aa
rote rote raat kategi
dil pe lagegaa jhatkaa
beta khel mat matkaa
ho o o o o o o
beta khel mat matkaa

bechke apna sabkuchh
ik din
ghar kar dega khaali
o bechke apna sabkuchh
ik din
ghar kar dega khaali
phir naa milega matkaa tujhko
aur naa lota thhaali

o yaad aayegi
us din naani
naa milega jis din paani
khul jaayengi aankhen teri
lagegaa aisaa jhatkaa
beta khel mat matkaa
ho o o o o o o
beta khel mat matkaa

aaloo ki tarkaari banengi
aur baingan ka bhartaa
haan hnn
aaloo ki tarkaari banengi
aur baingan ka bhartaa
tu bhi dekh le isko pyaare
ab kaahe ko dartaa

o ban jaayegi kismat teri
mit jaayegi ee hera pheri ee
bure kaam mein jo phansaa hai
aakhir mein wo latkaa
beta khel mat matkaa
ho o o o o o o
beta khel mat matkaa

satta race jackpot khelo
miley maut ki khaadi
o satta race jackpot khelo
miley maut ki khaadi
in dhhandhon se ulajh gayi hai
bade badon ki daadhhi

is baat ko dhyaan mein dhar le ae
kuchh achchhe kaam tu kar le
jhaad le apne dil ka maila
maar le ispe kaskaa
beta khel mat matkaa
ho o o o o o o
beta khel mat matkaa
matke mein jo dil atka
to pad jaayega phatkaa
beta khel mat matkaa
ho o o o o o o
beta khel mat matkaa

ho o o o o o o
beta khel mat matkaa
ho o o o o o o
beta khel mat matkaa
ho o o o o o o
beta khel mat matkaa
ho o o o o o o
beta khel mat matkaa
