R D Burman in 1970s was mostly known for composing songs that dazzled the senses. But he could also compose songs that touched the heart strings of the listeners. He tended to create the later kind of songs when he tied up with Gulzar as a lyricist. That way R D Burman was somewhat similar to Kishore Kumar who was known to be a happy go lucky character most of the time but when he produced movies, then most of his movies (with the exception of “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi”) were serious movies.

When I was in my formative years, R D Burman ruled the roost as a music director and I, alongwith the rest of India was mad about his music. It turns out that he has a following not only among those who lived during his era, but also among those who were born after R D Burman’s era.

Yesterday Peevesie’s mom made her debut as a lyrics contributor by sending the lyrics of a song from “Taxi Taxie” (1977). The movie may be of recent vintage, but little information is available about this movie. That is where we can always log on to our inhouse encyclopaedia and get all the details. When this blog was started more than three years ago, it used to be one song a day blog, and the song used to be of my own choice. “Aalap” (1977) was a movie that turned out to be a commercial disaster. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, it is easy for me to say that movies should not be judged on the basis of their box office performance, but unfortunately that is the single most important yardstick to judge the success of a movie. After the failure of this movie, Amitabh Bachchan resolved not to work in an offbeat movie like this. After a few years, he worked in another such off beat movie called “Main Aazaad Hoon” with similar disastrous results at the box office.

“Anurodh” (1977) is a movie that paired erstwhile superstar Rajesh Khanna with Simple Kapadia, his sister in law. The movie did not do as well as was expected of this movie. But what lovely songs this movie had ! In fact, this movie is remembered today mainly for its songs.

“Kotwal Sahab” (1977) is a movie which is directed by Hrishikesh Mukherji. This movie was different from the usual Hrishikesh Mukherji movies. Instead of his usual his usual breezy, humerous, sensitive kind of direction that one is used to, Hrishikesh Mukherji has took up a more serious topic in this movie. In this movie, Shatrughan Sinha is a no nonsence honest police officer. His wife Aparna Sen has a dark past and she does not know how to share that past with her husband, because she fears that it may complicate matters. Utpal Dutt, playing a unscrupulous politician who is aware of Aparna Sen’s past is out there to take advantage of her plight.
