“Aakhri Sajdaa” (1977) is a forgotten low budget movie that escaped public attention. The reason why I and like minded music lovers are interested in this movie is for a very important reason. It is the last movie of Sajjad Hussain as a music director. And that is a big reason for music lovers to be interested in this movie, or to be more precise, in the songs of this movie.

Popular wisdom about Sajjad Hussain is that he last composed for a Hindi movie in 1963. Fortunately, that is not the case. He, despite his troubles with movie makers continued to work till late 1970s. his last movie as a music director was in 1977 and this movie was “Aakhri Sajdaa” (1977). The star cast for this movie includes Maya Sinha, Tabrez, Murad, Veena, Jagdeep, Helen, Husn Banu etc.

This is a gem of a ghazal presented in Mujra style. Once again, very beautiful, almost semi classical composition. The words are lovely, and the music is just wonderful. As with the other song picturised on Helen, the quality of on screen situation and picturization is average. However, the song is mesmerizing, if one listens only to the audio, without any visual distractions.

It is popularly believed (and faithfully reproduced by most sites copying from each other) that “Rustam Sohrab” (1963) was the last movie of Sajjad Hussain as a music director. Fortunately for music lovers, Sajjad Hussain was active even later and he kept getting assignments till 1970s, even if they were few and far between.

“Baalika Badhu” (Child bride) as the name suggests was a movie made on the theme of child marriage. In this movie, Sachin and Rajni Sharma play the children who get married to each other. Sachin has some idea of what marriage is all about but his bride (played by a then thirteen year old Rajni Sharma) is mentally still a child. The dilemma of a teenage boy dealing with his wife who is still a kid was depicted nicely in this movie.

To me, “Amar, Akbar, Anthony”, a 1977 release, defined the Bollywood of late 70’s to mid-80’s. The ubiquitous lost-and-found formula, rocking songs, maar-peet, vendetta, incredibly hirsute villains…. you name it and it was there. It was a multi-starrer too, multi-starrer being a buzz-word in the era. A multi-starrer to beat all multi-starrers!

In Hindi movies, actors are often seen singing in front of a gathering while seated on a grand piano. This to my mind was rather unrealistic. For one, there may not have been too many households owning spacious houses with huge hall where such grand pianos were kept. Secondly, it is humanly not possible to play the piano and sing a song simultaneously.

The charm of Hindi films for me began from the time I began watching them avidly. The charm lay in those unique features of the Hindi film; multi-starrer, great fight scenes, action-packed, zingy songs and scintillating dialogues. If this was coupled with a lost-and-found brother/friend plot, with messages on religious harmony, and with good triumphing over evil, what more could a teenager want!
