“Minoo” (1977) was a Hena Films Production. It wa directed by Parshuram and Pushraj. The movie had Baby Moonmoon, Dinesh Thakur, Radha Saluja, Nanditha Thakur, Padma Khanna, Jagdeep, Anwar Hussain, Dulari,Sudhir, Manmauji, Ranjeet Sood etc in it. The story of this movie revolves around a small girl child who was hoping that her mother is going to bring a small brother to play with her. Unfortunately, her mother never returns from hospital to her side. Her father remarries and the girl find it very hard to digest the situation and flees from home. A movie with this kind of story line and that too made on a small budget with no stars did not have a market those days. In fact, a movie like this does not have a market even today and so few people watched this movie.

One of the advantages of living through a period (as opposed to reading or hearing about it second-hand) is that you have your own experiences of it that nothing else can quite substitute for. Of course, events may be recorded very accurately for posterity so that future generations get an idea of the past. But it is still not the same thing.

R D Burman in 1970s was mostly known for composing songs that dazzled the senses. But he could also compose songs that touched the heart strings of the listeners. He tended to create the later kind of songs when he tied up with Gulzar as a lyricist. When I was in my formative years, R D Burman ruled the roost as a music director and I, alongwith the rest of India was mad about his music. It turns out that he has a following not only among those who lived during his era, but also among those who were born after R D Burman’s era.

Yesterday Peevesie’s mom made her debut as a lyrics contributor by sending the lyrics of a song from “Taxi Taxie” (1977). The movie may be of recent vintage, but little information is available about this movie. That is where we can always log on to our inhouse encyclopaedia and get all the details. Here is what our walking encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh has to say about this movie:-

When this blog was started more than three years ago, it used to be one song a day blog, and the song used to be of my own choice. With time, I started receiving farmaishes and I would try to comply with them. Soon I was inundated with so many farmaishes that I was left with a pending list running into many hundreds of songs, if not more.

“Aalap” (1977) was a movie that turned out to be a commercial disaster. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, it is easy for me to say that movies should not be judged on the basis of their box office performance, but unfortunately that is the single most important yardstick to judge the success of a movie. After the failure of this movie, Amitabh Bachchan resolved not to work in an offbeat movie like this. After a few years, he worked in another such off beat movie called “Main Aazaad Hoon” with similar disastrous results at the box office.

Today is Rajesh Khanna’s birthday. His name always evokes memories for me because he was the colossus when I was first beginning to learn Hindi and watch Hindi movies in my life. Here are my thoughts on that period and on Rajesh Khanna. This is a somewhat long post but I hope you will have the patience to read it all the way through.
