What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died? Thus starts the very first line of one of the most famous novels ever written. “Love Story” by Erich Segal first published on 14th February 1970 has sold more than a 22 million copies worldwide and has been translated into more than 20 languages. A novel of hardly a hundred pages, it captivates the reader from the very first line. It’s basically a romantic and a very tragic story of two young college grads coming from two extremely different backgrounds.

And with this duet, another film from 1978 makes a debut on the blog. The film is ‘Damaad’ directed by Raja Rakshit. This song I would not categorize as obscure. It was heard relatively more often on the radio, and continues to be alive in memory. And what a gem of a song this one also is.

This solo song that got picked for 1978 is a real surprise. Wonderful gem from an obscure film. A song that was heard occasionally, before fading away from radio waves and settling into the quicksand of memories. As I was browsing the list for 1978, this song strummed lost memories of absolutely lovely songs and I had to pick it as tops.

Sahir Ludhianvi will always be remembered for the respect he brought to the lyricists of Hindi films. His arrival in the Hindi film industry set a bench mark for lyricists which brought about a transformation in the style of lyrics writing for Hindi film songs from the 5Os through 7Os.

“Devta”(1978) was a remake of the Tamil Movie “Gnana Oli”(1972) directed by P. Madhavan, written by Vietnam Veedu Sundaram and starring Sivaji Ganesan in the lead role.

Today (2 september 2014) is the birth anniversary of Sadhana, the heart throb of millions of movie watchers in 1960s.
A few of her movies that were started in late 1960s had to be held in abeyance because Sadhana suffered from an ailment that affected her face. This, plus the fact that time and tide waits for none, meant that she was a pale shadow of her earlier self when she returned back after getting healed. Time had passed her by in the interim. Shooting of a few of her incomplete movies were resumed but it was too late by that time and these movies failed at the box office.

In our high school curriculum, we had Hindi Padhya (Poetry) in which, among others, poems of Meerabai, Tulsidas, Kabirdas, Surdas, Raskhan were taught to us. While most of the poems were in the praise of Lord Ram and Krishna, poems of Sant Kabirdas were not addressed to any specific God. I had heard the word ‘nirgun’ from my teacher in regard to the poems of Sant Kabirdas, I did not know the meaning of ‘nirgun’ in wider sense until few years back. Genius of Jaidev

Gaman (1978) was produced and directed by Muzaffar Ali and had star cast consisting Farooq Shaikh, Jalal Agha, Nana Patekar, Smita Patil, Gita Siddharth, Satish Shah etc., with lyrics by Shahryar and music by Jaidev. In his unique style Jaidev used new voices, not usually used by other MDs. Chhaya Ganguli got her first break as a film playback singer with her award winning song ‘Aap Ki Yaad Aati Rahi Raat Bhar’ in film ‘Gaman’. Other voices used in the film ware Classical Singer Hiradevi Mishra, Hariharan, Suresh Wadkar etc.
