This article is written by Pamir Harvey, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
It seems like “Saveray Wali Gaadi”(1986) makes a debut on this blog with this song. This reflects the fact that the film is hardly remembered now. The reason behind that is that the movie was not highly successful. Thus also sank the beautiful soundtrack of the movie. The songs are not vintage Pancham-stuff but they are very hummable and much better than what his stable would churn out in the later part of the 80s.

“Naache Mayuri”(1986)” was a Hindi remake of the Telugu “Mayuri”(1984). These movies were based on the real life story of Sudha Chandran. Sudha Chandran, a dancing enthusiast, had lost one leg in an accident. But she braved all odds and used artifical limb (prosthetic ‘Jaipur foot’) and continued to pursue her first love viz. dancing and became a leading dancer. She was invited to perform in India as well as abroad. Her fame spread and she got offers to work in movies. Telugu movie “Mayuri” (1984) was made on her own life. This movie became a big success at the box office. It was subsequently dubbed into Malayalam and Telugu with the same title. Later on, this movie was remade into Hindi as “Naache Mayuri” (1986).

Most patriotic songs that have gone on to become immortal were created in 1960s when Bollywood was at its richest, when it came to singers, lyricists and music directors. Moreover, India was just a few years into independence those days and therefore the creators of these songs created them with feeling and passion.

“Chitthi” songs, viz songs where one feels nostalgic about one’s loved ones and waits for “chitthi” from them makes for some of the best and most memorable songs. I have posted one such song from 1970s viz. ” daakiya daak laaya”.
The song “daakiya daak laaya” from a 1977 movie called “Palkon ki chhaon mein” was quite a popular “chitthi” song, before it was upstaged by another song of this genre. This song ” chitthi aayi hai watan se chitthi aayi hai” from “Naam” (1986) touched the heart strings of the listeners as no chitthi song had ever done before.

This movie, a historical movie, was adjusted as boring by janta, and they kept away. Songs of this movie did marginally better, though they were by no means Binaca geetmala chart busting songs.

Kishore Kumar has sung some awesome sad songs, which are very well known. These days,I have been unearthing some forgotten gems of Kishore Kumar. Surprisingly, these forgotten songs are not all that old. These songs were recorded in 1980s. The fact that the movies to which these songs belonged failed miserably, may have been one of the reasons why these songs failed to become as popular as they should have.
