So this month sees a few greats celebrating their birthdays, one of them being Shabana Azmi- daughter of the very talented Shaukat Azmi and the poet with Communist leanings Kaifi Azmi. Basically a talent that was more into art films (a very Bollywood way of naming cinema that were seen only at film festivals and at the National Award ceremonies) but some one who couldn’t completely ignore the pulls from the commercial cinema (as Shashi Kapoor once said one genre kept his home fires burning and providing funds for the other genre). So we could see her winning awards for Paar, Arth Nishant etc and entertaining us in Parvarish, Fakira, Swarag Narag, Jwalamukhi etc, in my honest opinion she looked great in glamorous outfits as well as in Sarees.

This is a Sonu Nigam song from the 1997 film Pardes. It happens to be one of those songs which were in my original list of desert songs. This is a Subhash Ghai film starring Shah Rukh Khan, Apoorva Agnihotri, Mahima Chaudhary, Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher etc. This was Mahima Chaudhary’s first film. And as per his penchant for naming the heroines he would launch in his movies, Subhash Ghai has given her the name ‘Mahima’. Just like, Meenakshi (Hero) and Madhuri (Ram Lakhan) etc. Having seen the film on its release, this song is there in the memory as one with a car driving fast on the interstate in the middle of desert. On seeing it again Irealised that only a little part of the song is on the road, in a car. The rest of it is in Las Vegas and Disney land.

By the time 1990s came along Hindi movies were getting loud, the heros were mannerless, ill-bred uncouth fellows. Sadak Chhap Romeos with a heart of gold, diamonds in the rough who start out rather badly, but by the end, redeem themselves by doing the right thing.

The film Sapnay(1997), was dubbed from a TeleguTamil Film named “minsaara Kanavu”. I found this while looking for information about the story etc. here. I have seen this movie, maybe once or maybe in parts. I remembered a part of the story and songs, which were very melodious. The song “Chanda re chanda re” is a favourite with me for many reasons. First is the melody, which makes it such a hummable song. I especially like the interlude music, which makes Kajol respond and start singing with Prabhu Deva. And the way it is picturized next to an ‘urban pond’ with slum dwellers living around it. And the most important factor of all is Prabhu Deva’s choreography and dance, and the non-serious way he is treating the whole thing. I am guessing Prabhu Deva is the choreographer here, as he is a choreographer first than a dancer, then an actor turned action director to full fledge Film Director, when last heard.

Discussing songs is one of the main activities of this blog. Discussing topical songs for special occasions is also one of our regular activities. With time, I notice that we have started to discuss songs on the occasion of anniversaries of various film personalities. Since there have been hundreds upon hundreds such personalities, such anniversaries are quite frequent and as a result, we end up discussing songs featuring artists on their anniversaries quite regularly.

I have mentioned in the past that most movie songs that we get to listen to are from movies that were released. But there are cases when a movie fails to get released but a few of its songs get released and some of them even become popular.

Then there are some cases when the movie as well as the songs remain unreleased for decades, before someone decided to release the audio of the songs from the still unreleased movie.
