Today, January 28, 2026, is the 89th birthday of playback singer, Suman Kalyanpur whose career growth got stunted because she remained under the shadow of a ‘banyan tree’ called Lata Mangeshkar. Sometime, having a voice quality too close to that of the top most playback singer of the film industry becomes a bane.
Suman Kalyanpur was born in Dhaka (now in Bangla Desh) as Suman Hemmadi when her father was working in Central Bank of India, Dhaka. The family belonged to Hemmadi village in Kundapura taluka, now in Udupi district of Karnataka. The family shifted from Dhaka to Mumbai in 1943 on her father’s transfer. Suman Kalyanpur was interested in singing and painting. After passing her Matriculation exam from St Columbia High School, she joined Sir J J School of Arts with Painting as the main subject. Simultaneously, she started her musical training under Keshavrao Bhole and later Ustad Khan Abdul Rehman Khan. She started singing on All India Radio in 1952. She got her first playback singing opportunity for a Marathi film, ‘Shukrachi Chaandni’ (1953).

#the Decade of 2020s– 2021- TO – 2030 #
———————————————————–————
Today we celebrate the 77th Republic Day of our country India. Our Independence is already above seventy-eight years now. We gained our hard fought freedom on 15th August 1947. So we gained independence more than 78 years ago, whereas India became a republic on this date in 1950.
We are all aware of the supreme sacrifices made by our freedom fighters and common people. The country was blessed to have some visionary leaders who led this freedom struggle. Once independence was achieved, they ensured that this hard fought freedom was not squandered but used for the benefit of the country and its population. Drafting a constitution for this newly idependent vast nation and making it a republic, where every citizen was guaranteed equality, irrespective of their caste, creed, religion and gender, was something unprecedented in the entire history of India. India became a republic on 26 January 1950 and from that day onwards, India has been governed according to the Indian constitution that came into force on that date.

Today I introduce a song from a movie which makes a debut on this blog. The movie I am talking about is “Laila” released in 1984 and the song is a fast romantic one sung by Kishore Kumar – “Ho Gaye Deewane Tum Ko Dekh Kar”.
The 1984 film Laila is a romantic drama directed by Saawan Kumar Tak. It is notably remembered as one of the early films of Anil Kapoor’s career, though its release was slightly delayed, leading to Woh 7 Din being his official debut as a leading man.
