‘Imaandaar’ (1987) was produced by Surendra Pal Chaudhary and Sarla Sandhu and was directed by Sushil Malik. The cast included Sanjay Dutt and Farah Naaz in the lead roles supported by Pran, Sumeet Saigal, Satyen Kappu, Vikas Anand, Rohan Kapoor, Ranjeet, Mehmood, Om Prakash, Birbal, Chandrashekhar, Sudhir Dalvi, Dinesh Hingoo, Shammi, Shashi Kiran, Mehmood Jr., Ram Sethi, Subbiraj etc.
The film was a Prakash Mehra presentation which indicates as to who was behind this film. Sushil Malik, the director of the film was Prakash Mehra’s assistant director. The film’s producer, Surendra Pal Chaudhary was one of the partners of Prakash Mehra Productions. Another connection of this film with Prakash Mehra is his trademark film story revolving around a homeless, abandoned and orphaned lead actor, like in ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ (1978), ‘Jwaalaamukhi’ (1980), ‘Laawaaris’ (1981), ‘Sharaabi’ (1984) etc. In a way, Prakash Mehra was replicating his own story who was an orphan child having lost his mother and thereafter his father abandoning him when he was 8 year of age.

Today’s song is from an obscure film of the Golden Era – Sahil-1959.
Personally, I had never heard of this film. Though after Tumsa Nahi Dekha-1957, Shammi Kapoor had changed his looks – by removing his mustache, which never suited him – and style of acting, somehow this film never appealed to the viewers. I don’t even remember when it was in the theatres ! While going through the HFGK, I found the reason. It seems the film was made in 1955/56 and even the songs were recorded in 1954/55. For unknown reasons the film was censored on 8-4-1959 and was finally released in October 1959.
Since this film belonged to the period of Shammi Kapoor’s old style- with mustache – and by 1959-60 he was on a success ride, no one wanted to see this film. As such there was nothing notable in this film. The story was weak, the starcast was ordinary and the songs were not good enough to attract the audience. So the film flopped and disappeared from the theatres quickly.

This was Sridevi’s first Hindi film in a lead role. The film was entirely shot in Jharkhand in a month’s time in rural region. Today’s song is from a social film- Fashionable wife-1959.
Very few know that there was an interesting film of the same title- Fashionable wife in 1938 also. I called it interesting, because its Hero- Sardar Gul, came from Calcutta and did a role in the film Said e hawas-1936, made by Sohrab Modi’s film company ” Stage Films”. Sohrab Modi gave the Hero a screen name of Chandra Kumar. Actually, the film was only a shooting of the very popular stage play of the same name. Sardar Gul was promised Rs. 200 for this film. However the film flopped miserably and Modi refused to pay him more than Rs. 50 only. Enraged, he threw the money on Modi’s face and left for Calcutta. After 2 years he returned to Bombay, with a new screen name Anil Kumar and acted in the film Fashionable wife. He went on to do more than 30 films till 1964.
Similarly, the film Fashionable wife-1959 was also interesting. The heroine of the film- Jaymala was the wife of the producer director , B.K.Adarsh. She had done few films earlier, but being the wife of the producer she was made a Heroine, as it was all a ” Ghar ka mamla” ! She was neither very beautiful nor a very good actress. This is how Nepotism existed in Hindi films for a long time.
