Republic day is a holiday that nearly everyone looks forward to in this country.
As a kid I would hate the day, though. We would have to get ready even earlier than usual, find our way to school for the ‘jhanda vandan’ – flag hoisting ceremony. I would usually be both in the marchpast and the patriotic dance. So, I would have to do a sneak off as soon as the flag is hoisted and get in costume for a badly choreographed patriot dance which had more in common with the actions that accompany a nursery rhyme.
I would then head back home where the society ‘jhanda vandan‘ would be over already and there would be poha for breakfast. My friends and I would chill together and then head home once our parents have finally gone hoarse from calling out to us for lunch. Then of course it would be the ol’e hearty meal and hearty sleep routine.

I congratulate all our readers on the auspicious occasion of this 69th REPUBLIC DAY of our country (26 january 2018).
Seriously, how many of us really know the definition of a Republic ? As per the Oxford Dictionary, “A Republic is a sovereign country, which is organised with a form of Government in which the power resides with elected individuals, who exercise power according to the rule of the law “. In short, it is a government of the people, by the people and for the people.
After India achieved freedom in 1947, some films on Patriotic themes were made. ‘Andolan’ (1951) was one such film. Made by Harnam Motwane, under his banner Motwane Ltd, this film is labelled as a ‘historic’ film by HFGK. That may be because in this film the history of India’s independence struggle from 1885 to 1947 is shown with the documentaries and actual footage (with a basic film story, of course) from short films made by Films Division and some film companies like Krishna and Kohinoor films.

Missing Films of 1960s – 52
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
A bit of a coincidence here that the song of this series posted yesterday “O Chanda. . . Aaj Ki Raat Na Dhalna”, and today’s next song in this series, both are ‘chaand’ songs. Yesterday’s song got posted early in the morning, and later I was thinking – posting a ‘chaand’ song at sunrise time is wholly inappropriate. And so, today’s ‘chaand’ song I am bringing to you at an appropriate time in the evening – a waxing moon is in the skies.
Today’s film is ‘Bharat Milap’ from 1965. The film was produced under the banner of KP Productiond, Bombay, and the director’s name is Babubhai Mistry. The cast of actors includes Sohrab Modi, Sulochana, Ashish Kumar, Indrani Mukherjee, Leela Misra, Anand Kumar, and Mridula amongst others.

Rare Gems – Laxmikant Pyarelal
————————————
Being a fellow contributor to the ASAD blog, one is privy to being in the WhatsApp group, which while reading through the posts sometime back I came across my name and I was surprised. Atul Ji, the creator of ASAD had mentioned that my name had come up as the one with the longest absence from the group, with my last post more than two years ago.
It’s true and I would like to sincerely apologise to one and all about this. It can be attributed to many reasons including work etc, but it was never the lack of interest. My love for HFM and listening to it (and that too rare songs) is what gives me the maximum pleasure and acts as a real pain killer and a soother of sorts.
I have been meaning to post this song from almost immediately after my last post here. It is as rare as songs can go and would fit in to any programs broadcasted by SLBC (Radio Ceylon for us old timers) like Bhoole Bisre Geet or Jaane Pehchane Geet, etc

The year 1940 can be regarded as a benchmark year for Hindi film industry to assess its progress in the talkie era as it marked about a decade since talkies came into being. Although studio systems (in which artists were on the payrolls of the studios) continued, slowly the star system was evolving in which the star actor commanded the salary acccording to his success rate in box office collections. During this period, actors with star values emerged. They commanded good salary from their respective studios to ward off poaching by the competing film production companies. Films with K L Saigal, Prithviraj Kapoor, Chandramohan, Surendra, Motilal, Ashok Kumar, Durga Khote, Madhuri, Sabita Devi, Kanan Devi, Shobhana Samarth, Leela Chitnis, Naseem Bano etc were expected to be box office hits.
