“Kismat” (1943) was a landmark movie in the annals of Hindi movies. This movie was the first multi starrer movie in the Hindi movie industry. Its songs were hugely popular, and remain so to this day.

Though Deewali is one of the most important festivals in India, Hindi movies do not have adequate number of Deewali songs in them. This is in sharp contrast to the songs for another major Indian festival, viz Holi. There are many more “Holi” songs than we have “Deewali” songs.

There are several patriotic songs in Hindi movies. Most of these songs were created after independence, when India had already acquired independence. Creating patriotic songs in an independent nation is easy, but just imagine the case when India was not yet an independent nation.

Yesterday I had posted a song sung by Ashok Kumar for himself in the movie “Najma” (1943). In fact, those days actors had to sing their own songs, so only those persons made it as actors who were good looking and could sing passably well at least.

Ashok Kumar was a trained singer, whereas his younger brother Kishore Kumar was not. Even then, it was the untrained sibling who made it big as a playback singer.

I had never heard this song before. And few people may have heard this song considering that this is from a very old movie called “Tansen” (1943). This movie, as the name suggests was the story of Tansen, the court singer of Akbar. The lead actors in this movie were K L Saigal and Khursheed.
