Today (3 july) is the death anniversary of Raj Kumar. Raj Kumar made his debut as an actor in 1950s and his most productive decade as an actor was the decade of 1960s. There are actors who are remembered for songs picturised on him, but Raj Kumar is often remembered for some of the immortal dialogues picturised on her. For instance, the dialogue of “Waqt” (1975)- “ye bacchon ke khelne ki cheez nahin hai Chunar seth…”, and the “Paakeeja” (1971) dialogue’ “Aape paaon dekhe…”.

I dont know how it is that I am finding songs penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri again and again. The song which is under discussion is from the film “Ardhangini”. From the other songs posted here and seen on youtube it is seen that this film stars Meena Kumar and Raj Kumar, and from the title and songs I assume this to be similar type of social film like ‘Aarti”.

Once again, apologies for another gap in communications from my side. On the previous Sunday, i.e. 6th May, Nalin ji presented his program ‘Yaadon Ka Safar’ here in Delhi. The program lasted for about four and half hours, with a break in between. The evening was a very nostalgic and emotional journey through the earlier decades of Hindi film and film music, and with the amount of details and anecdotes that Nalin ji carries in his memory, the program was also very informative.

Munshi Premchand (31 July 1880- 8 october 1936) was a premier Hindi novelist whose novels and stories have had an enormous influence on modern Hindi literature. When I look at his literary output, I am amazed at his vision. His vision was unbelievably progressive and futuristic, especially considering the era he lived in (late 19th century to early 20th century).

Trawling, even for a few minutes, through the vast collection on the internet posted by so many lovers of Hindi music, the effort never goes unrewarded. And here is one delightful reward that I bumped into few days back, as I was looking for songs by Shailendra. A song that I heard long back, first time when I saw this film on Doordarshan, as a child, and then lost track in the interim. The film is ‘Insaan Jaag Utthaa’ from 1959. The film is a well known production from the banner of Shakti Films, Bombay, produced and directed by Shakti Samant. The main star cast of the film includes Madhubala, Sunil Dutt, Nazir Hussain, Minoo Mumtaz, Bipin Gupta, Nishi, Sunder, Krishnakant, Madanpuri, Manju, Praveen Paul, Shyam Kumar, Kesav Rana, SM Thakkar, TN Charlie and a host of character artists viz. Prem Anand, Sailen Bose, Kalpana, Mauji, Gautam, Kundan, Pacchi, Manju etc.

This time I have found a very rare duet sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mohammed Rafi. It is from the film “Minister”(1959). The song is written by Rajendra Krishan and composed by Madan Mohan. I have not heard or seen this song before. But it is a nice and funny song performed on screen by Tun Tun and Bhagwaan. It is the eternal fight between husbands and wives, which holds good across cultures world wide. Wife accusing husband of being irresponsible and careless and husband complaining that wife is always ready for a fight and doubting the husband at every turn.

Sometimes a rhythm, a tune just sticks into the mind and keeps replaying itself over and over again. This is what has happened, when I bumped into this song two days ago. I was preparing for a write up on Shailendra, having identified other songs (which I will post later now). And then found this song – “dar a dad a daa a dad daaraa, chandaa ke paas ik taara”. The rhythm just refuses to go away from my mind, even though it is a tongue twisting formation, and the mind does stumble sometimes, when trying to go over it. A real foot tapping, ear catching melody that just stays with you once you have heard it.
