When you are young, you only like to listen to “modern” songs and hate listening to old songs calling them boring. Here is a song that was old even by my standards of 1970s when I was growing up. But show me a song that could be more modern than this by now 51 year old song.

Laagi chhoote naa ab to sanam

I have mentioned it that this blog has songs from nearly 1000 Hindi movies as of now. The list of moviewise songs that I have provided gives us a good idea of the songs that have been posted. With time, I have posted all the songs from some movies- viz “Barsaat”(1949), “Dholak”(1950), “Madhumati” (1958) etc. In case of other movies, I am gradually building up the list song by song.

Today (24th August,2010) is the Indian festival of rakshabandhan, or Raakhi in brief. This is a festival when sisters tie Raakhi on the wrists of their brothers and the brother then vows to protect his sister.

While looking for songs, recently I stumbled upon this song from “Ardhaangini” (1959). And as often happens with me, I sat up and took notice. How come this song is not better known. This is a gem of a song really.

During the golden era of Hindi film music, movies, irrespective of their grading (A, B, C or whatever) tended to have A grade music. Not just the big name music directors, even lesser music directors were just as good as any. It is just that opportunities were few and far between and any many great talents were starved of opportunities.

It was on 31st July 1980 that Rafi left us for heavenly abode and the music world was suddenly a much poorer place. The vacuum that was created as a result of his demise could not be filled and that vacuum exists even today.

In Bollywood movies of 1950s and 1960s, we had “teasing” songs where the hero would tease the heroine, often too nastily in my view and get away with it, unlike how it is in real life in India, where “eve-teasing” is a serious offence.
