My first introduction to Uttam Kumar was way back in the childhood years when, for a long time, I used to confuse a lot between him and Biswajeet. It was in the years when watching television was a new adventure every day. One would scour around the neighborhood and get inside a friend’s or a familiar person’s home. Of course, as an uninvited intruder, one had to watch whatever was being telecast. In any case, Doordarshan was the only channel and there was no other option :). Some known programs would be a fixture that everyone watched. At other times, one would just intrude into whatever was playing on the screen.

Today (18 july 2013) is the first death anniversary of Rajesh Khanna (29 december 1942- 18 july 2012). Much have been written about him since late 1960s when he burst into the Hindi movie scene and reigned supreme. Whatever can be said and written about him has been written. Since I have to discuss a Rajesh Khanna song on this occasion, so let me also add some of my observations about Rajesh Khanna, with the full benefit of hindsight.

This is the title song of Mukti (1977). Death and Loss play a central role in the film in different forms. Thus this song is used in bits and parts throughout the film. I have included the complete audio version and also the bits which I could find, which were used in the film. Since these bits give away the ending of the film, a SPOILER ALERT! Please don’t watch the videos of the film, if you don’t want the ending to be revealed.

In Mukti (1977), Shashi Kapoor and Vidya Sinha play a happily married couple, till he is framed for murder and thus gets capital punishment. Thinking that he is dead she relocates to Bombay, where she meets the local goon, who helps the lonely “widow” and her daughter settle down. This other man is played by Sanjeev Kumar. In this song he seems to be drinking so that he can feel brave enough to admit his love to his adored one.

Mukti (1977) stars Shashi Kapoor, Vidya Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar and Bindiya Goswami. Shashi Kapoor plays Vidya Sinha’s husband. This happy couple has a daughter, who would grow up to be Bindiya Goswami. In the happier times of this small family, the father sings a lullaby to his daughter. As usual in films, these happy times don’t last forever and the father goes missing and then it is the mother’s turn to sing the lullaby with a similar mukhdaa but different antaras. Both versions are included here.

Mukti (1977) is Bindiya Goswami‘s debut film. From the looks of it this song most probably heralds her arrival on the screen. This also seems to be a song, which shows how the once small daughter has grown up and has stepped into her youth.

This is the only song missing from Kinara (1977) on this blog. The song is in flashback, when Aarti (Hema Malini) remembers her fiancé (Dharmendra) and their times together. He has died in a car accident.

Hi all
After long I found time to put my thoughts down.
So I was thinking of a few movies which used the same story idea like for example ” Khatta Meetha” (1978) and “Hamare tumhare” (1979). Both were inspired by the 1968 Lucille Ball -Henry Fonda movie “Yours Mine And Ours”. Then in the year 2002 we had a similar situation where Rajkumar Santoshi decided to make “The Legend Of Bhagat Singh” and Dharamendra made “23rd March 1933”. And we all know the source of inspiration for these movies. And this list will include other movies too- that is same story idea and releasing around the same time. (My Peevesie reminds me that we had 2 other movies that year with the Bhagat Singh story.)
