‘Basera’ (1981) was produced by Ramesh Behl under his banner, Rose Movies and was directed by Ramesh Talwar. The cast included Shashi Kapoor, Rakhee, Rekha, Poonam Dhillon, Raj Kiran, Iftekhar, A K Hangal, Sudha Chopra etc. The film was based on a Marathi novel written by Leela Phansalkar. In fact, Ramesh Talwar has directed IPTA play, Tanhaai’ (1971) based on this novel. It was decided to convert his IPTA play into the film, ‘Basera’ (1981).
The film is about two sisters who are wedded to the same man by a twist of fate. In an interview published in ‘Filmfare’, April 22, 2016, Ramesh Talwar had revealed that for the roles of two sisters, he had already finalised Rakhee. He told Rakhee that if she accepted the role of the younger sister, he would take Nutan for the role of elder sister. However, Rakhee preferred the elder sister’s role and suggested Rekha’s name for the younger sister’s role. After the separation of Rakhee and Gulzar, this was the first film with Rakhee in which Gulzar got associated as the screenplay, dialogues and song writer. Interestingly, Rekha, apart from her role as the second wife of Shashi Kapoor is also in the role of Raj Kiran’s mother, who in reality, is elder to her by 5 years.

In the Indian traditional societal setting, the men are regarded as the bread winner for the family while the women are assigned as homemakers who stay at home and manage the kitchen, housekeeping, taking care of the children etc. In urban setting, some women have dual roles. They are not only the homemakers, but they are also the working women giving the financial support to the family. Men are not expected to be homemakers. These gender-based responsibilities have been majorly followed in India since long. The role reversal in responsibilities between husband and wife was unthinkable even in the last century and it is still not fully appreciated.
There has been some cases of role reversal taking place especially in metropolitan and urban India. I had known one such case in my office as early as in 1965 when the wife was working in my office and her husband was employed in a private firm. But the situation in the family forced the wife to think of resigning from her service to look after her infant when the alternative arrangements did not work out. Her husband volunteered to resign from his private job on a realistic consideration as the wife was getting higher salary than him. At that time, her husband was the talking point in my office as it was thought to be a revolutionary step by him.

‘Daasi’ (1981) was produced by Subhash Verma and was directed by Raj Khosla. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Rakesh Roshan, Vikram, Paintal, Radhika Bartake, Sidharth Kak, Dhumal, Leela Mishra, Sundar, Narbada Shankar, Anita Advani etc.
The film was planned in 1976 based on a Hindi novel, ‘Mangala’ (1958) written by Anant Gopal Shevde. The main plank of the story in the novel is that Mangala goes through a deceitful arranged marriage with a blind singer, Pandit Sadananda. As a revenge, she rebels against the marriage by seducing her husband’s best friend and finally eloping with him. In the end, Mangala returns to her husband, Pandit Sadananda and becomes a vocalist under his tutelage. However, during the film’s planning stage, the producer and distributors felt that the plot was too bold and the audience may not accept it. Raj Khosla majorly tweaked the story of the novel for the film by making the husband’s friend (Rakesh Roshan) as her ex-lover and making him a grey character. It is Rakesh Roshan who tries to seduce Mangala. (Source: ‘Raj Khosla – The Authorised Biography (2025) by Amborish Roychoudhury, Anita Khosla and Uma Khosla).
