Apart from mainstream movies, which meant “action” movies in 1970s, there were social/family movies as well in those days. One major maker of such movies was Rajshree productions. In addition, there were a few south Indian producers of such social/ family movies as well.

“Silsila” was based on the real life story of Amitabh Bachchan , Jaya Bhaduri and Rekha. To this day, wonder how all three of them agreed to wash their dirty linens in public in this movie.

This is a nice timepass song from 1981. The movie is called “Daulat” and this song is a duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle and is picturised on Vinod Khanna and Zeenat Aman.

The movie is called “Daulat” and this song is an archtypical villain’s den song. Hero and heroine are in “disguise” of sorts and the lady keeps gesturing to the hero during her singing. I do not know how successful she is in communicating that way. The villain and his gangsters appear smarter than usual, and they have taken up positions as waiters in the club where this song is being sung.

Somehow I feel that “Umrao Jaan” was to Rekha what “Paakeza” was to Meena Kumari. Both these movies were of a similar genre, showing a courtesan singing Mujra in a kotha.

I just expounded on my theory that Amitabh Bachchan tended to have quite a few “friendship” songs in his movies. In fact, the title of two of his movies themselves were friendship based- viz “Dostana” and “Yaraana”, both meaning “friendship”. Of course, there were “friendship” songs even in those Amitabh movies whose titles were different- viz in movies like “Zanjeer”, “Hera Pheri”,”Ram Balram” etc.
