Today’s song is from the film Amrapali-1945. The film was made by Murlitone. This historical film was directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal. The music was composed by Saraswati devi, who had left Bombay Talkies, after the exit of Devika Rani. The 11 songs of the film were written by Miss Kamal, B.A.. Most readers who are knowledgeable about the vintage films of the 40’s know that Miss Kamal, B.A. was a pseudonym of Kavi Pradeep. At that time, he was under contract with Bombay Talkies and could not use his real name . Under this Pen name, he wrote lyrics for four films, namely Kadambari-44, Amrapali-45, Sati Toral-47 and Veerangana-47. Incidentally, all these films were directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal.

During 1945-47, Hindi film industry went through a difficult phase. The speculative gains made by some businessmen during the period of WWII which were partly chanellised in the film industry, dried up which affected the film production. When the film industry was just recovering from the after effect of WWII, communal riots broke out on the eve of as well as following the partition, affecting film productions at Bombay (Mumbai)whereas Lahore film industry was badly affected as many film financiers and technicians migrated to India.

The first song from the film CHAAND CHAKORI (1945), jogan banaa ke piyaa chhod gayo galiyon mein was posted on the Blog about 6 years back. Since then, no more songs from the film were covered in the Blog. In the write-up to the first song from the film, Atul ji had mentioned that very little information about the film was available online. At that time, I doubt whether any songs from this film was available on YT as I find that the first and the only song out of 13 songs from the film was uploaded by Atul ji on YT.

Today I had originally lined up another song from the early 50s, to continue with my discussions on the melodies of the decade, which I called ” Melody Yatra of the 50s ” sometime back. However, I changed my mind and considering the oncoming Deepavali, I am discussing a beautiful song ( both to listen and see) from the film ” RAM RAJYA “-43.

The moment the image of Ameerbai Karnataki comes to my mind, I remember some of her most popular songs, mostly full of pathos, melancholy, and devotion. In fact, the most popular songs of her singing career come from these genres. She started her filmy career in 1934 as an actor-singer but realising that the potential for career as a playback singer was bright after the system of playback singing was introduced in Bombay film industry in 1937, she confined herself mainly to playback singing thereafter. After her songs in ‘Kismet’ (1943) became very popular, for the next five years or so, she remained one of the top playback singers. Of the total of around 375 songs she sang during her filmy career, more than 50% was accounted for during 1943-48.
