October seems to be the month of birthdays for all who made it a habit to entertain us. We have already celebrated Vinod Khanna’s birthday. Next was the turn of Rekha who shares her birhday with S.D.Burman. Then we have the Superstar of the millennium (as the media went overboard describing him) Amitabh Bachchan followed by the grand old man of Hindi movies Ashok Kumar who shares it with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Then the list will have Nirupa Roy (everyone’s Mom or Ashok Kumar’s heroine as you may choose to remember her). And going by the list which Atul has compiled with the list sent by our in-house encyclopedia Arunkumar Deshmukhji and lots of inputs from Khyatiji and Prakashchandraji we will be celebrating a lot of birthdays in the days to come.

When one looks at the starcast of this movie, one finds the name of Vinod Khanna as the hero who looked the most likely candidate to challenge Amitabh Bachchan as the leading male actor of those days, but unlike Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna lacked peace of mind and was searching for it in the Ashram of Bhagwan Rajneesh, later known as Osho. As a result, Vinod Khanna was distracted and was unable to devote himself fully to his filmy career. That told on the box office performances of his movies of those days.

In Hindi movies, the hero is often a small kid in the first reel who then transforms into the grown up hero in the blink of an eye. The kid who plays the role of the young hero shares the same hair style, dress and mannerism that the grown up hero is known for. Thus master Mayur (playing Amitabh Bachchan’s childhood role) would sport the same hairstyle and dress that Amitabh Bachchan was known for, and he would in fact even sing love song for the small girl who would later grow up to become the heroine. 🙂

In 1960s, movies involving Mehmood had CSP (comic side plot) which often ran nearly as long as the main plot and that was supposed to be funny. In most of these CSPs, Shubha Khote would play Mehmood’s love interest and Dhumal would be her father.
