A year before she arrived at the zenith of playback singing with Aayega aane waala in Mahal (1949), a still-teenage Lataji vocalized her first ghazal – the mind-blowing Dil-e-naashaad ko jeene ki hasrat ho gayee tumse under the baton of Hansraj Bahl in Chunariya (1948). Her superb rendition of this none-too-easy a number with expression, enunciation and mastery on its many murkis in all octaves is just breath-taking.

Today is Raja Swaminathan’s birthday! Raja is, as many of you must already be knowing, a regular contributor of posts here at this blog. Over the years I have learnt to admire his knowledge not only of Hindi songs, but also his knowledge in many fields particularly cricket. Raja is very lucid in his words and it is always a pleasure to read his passionate essays on his blog. His precise nature and ability to understand situations and context also makes him valuable as translator for the Edu productions in subtitling old films. More than all this I value Raja as a friend with whom I can do pagalpanthi! Happy Birthday Raja!

This musical bandwagon continues to roll on unabated (touchwood !) and we continue to pass milestones at regular intervals.

Century of songs is the most basic and common kind of milestone for this song. In the earlier days of the blog, we just counted the number of songs posted in the day and every 100th song was a cause for celebration.

Today (16 october) is the 64th birthday of Hema Malini. She ruled the roost in 1970s. So much so that she was described as dream girl by the media. To capitalise on this sobriquet, Pramod Chakraborty actually made a movie called “Dream Girl” (1977) signing up Hema Malini and Dharmendra.

October seems to be the month of birthdays for all who made it a habit to entertain us. We have already celebrated Vinod Khanna’s birthday. Next was the turn of Rekha who shares her birhday with S.D.Burman. Then we have the Superstar of the millennium (as the media went overboard describing him) Amitabh Bachchan followed by the grand old man of Hindi movies Ashok Kumar who shares it with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Then the list will have Nirupa Roy (everyone’s Mom or Ashok Kumar’s heroine as you may choose to remember her). And going by the list which Atul has compiled with the list sent by our in-house encyclopedia Arunkumar Deshmukhji and lots of inputs from Khyatiji and Prakashchandraji we will be celebrating a lot of birthdays in the days to come.

I was at my movie watching “best” in 1980, and movies of that vintage are recent movies by the standards of this blog. Still I had never heard of this movie called “Zaalim” (1980) till now. When one looks at the starcast of this movie, one finds the name of Vinod Khanna as the hero who looked the most likely candidate to challenge Amitabh Bachchan as the leading male actor of those days, but unlike Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna lacked peace of mind and was searching for it in the Ashram of Bhagwan Rajneesh, later known as Osho. As a result, Vinod Khanna was distracted and was unable to devote himself fully to his filmy career. That told on the box office performances of his movies of those days.
