It may be difficult to imagine today but actors like Ashok Kumar and Nirupa Roy used to act in lead roles five decades ago, before they began to play roles of parents. In fact, the two of them were paired opposite each other in lead roles in many movies of late 1950s.

“Bedard Zamaanaa Kyaa Jaane” (1959) was a B grade movie starring Ashok Kumar, Nirupa Roy,Sudesh Kumar, Jabeen Jaleel etc. This movie is quite significant from music point of view. It was with this movie that Kalyanji Veerji Shah made his debut as an independent music director. Till then, he was assisting to other senior music directors viz Hemant Kumar etc. After another movie (Madaari), Kalyanji was joined by his younger brother Anandji and they formed the by now legendary musical partnership known as Kalyanji Anandji.

I think I will not be entirely wrong if I say that one of the reasons songs appeal to all of us is not just because of the song itself. Fans of my generation remember Ashok Kumar and Nirupa Roy for playing the roles of parents, but that was not always the case. In their younger days (it may be difficult to believe, but they were actually young as some time in the past), they actually acted in lead roles.
