Looking at the title line, I am tempted to start searching for songs which are built around the theme of the clock and  time on the clock. Yes, there are a few songs that come to mind, but then likely many of them are probably already here on the blog. Let me see.

The songs that you have rendered, the legacy that you have left behind, it strums the strings of the heart and brings unfettered pleasure to the listening mind. The treasure is limitless, and yet limited. Limitless – that we can hear them over and over again, and the listening pleasure multiplies. And yes, limited too – for we know now, what we have is what it is; there will be additions to this treasure no more.

Some solace that we have a treasure of your songs to live by. Else the memories of the past would have been a difficult thing to live with.

The 1960 film ‘Naache Naagin Baaje Been’ is turning out to be a treasure hunt. The film is packed with such wonderful melodies. I pick today’s 9th song of the series from this film.

Missing Films of 1960s – 51
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

It is not just a song that I should be concerned about. It is the entire film that I am surprised, has missed the attention of the team members of this blog. And not that the film is the issue. It is the songs that I wonder about. And just the category – ‘How come I missed this song’, will not suffice. Maybe another category that says – ‘How come we all missed this movie’.

The film that I am talking about is ‘Mahabharat’ from 1965. And I am sure you will be asking me – why? Another quite obscure film from the 1960s, as obscure as they come. But the songs, I am sure are going to turn out to be very familiar, most of them are favorites from radio listening days. Just sample these

  • “Champa Kali Chhup Chhup Jaaye Re”
  • “Ta Na Na Dir Dir Deem, Deem Ta Dere Na”
  • “Hari Hari Dharti Hai Neela Gagan”
  • “Sakhi Ri Baaje Mann Ki Baansuriya”

And today’s debut song, which is not the least of these – “O Chanda. . . Aaj Ki Raat Na Dhalna”. This film is such treasure of wonderful songs, all of them available online. And yet, this film has taken all this time to make its debut here.

Rewind back – goodness – 46 years. This song is from 1971, and the dear melody that we all love is quite alive and well.

Two names that we remember, and honor today – Chitragupt and Kaifi Azmi. Today, it is the birth anniversary of Kaifi Azmi and it is the passing away remembrance day for Chitragupt.

Aah, Shyama. . . the vivacious, bubbly, chirpy, charming Shyama. That is the image that the mind always carries, of this spirited young lady, so full of life on the screen. Some memories and some reflections are so firmly engraved in the mind that it simply does not register or acknowledge the passage of time and the passing of eras. That is the beauty of these memories – that their beauty simply never fades away.

Saga Of Sleepless Nights -1
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

oo oo. . neend na mujh ko aaye,
dil mera ghabraaye
chup ke chup ke, koyi aa ke,
soyaa pyaar jagaaye

There must have been an age, a time in life, a passage of emotional intensities, when you may have spend a few (or maybe many) sleepless nights – thinking, waiting, contemplating. Yes, they visit us all, the nights of the wide open eyes, when a cloudy sky is an irritating bore – for if the skies were clear, at least you would be able to start counting the stars.

Remembering Geeta Dutt.

She passed away 45 years ago on 20th July in 1972, brining to close a tumultuous and tragic life, all of 41 years. A voice that held so much promise, and yes, she gave too, so many wonderful gems to remember her by. Just going by the numbers – the decade of 1950s carries close to 850 songs sung by her. And then, in the 1960s, she has recorded less than hundred. And the majority of them belonging to the first half of the decade.

ek time machine ka sawaal hai baba

I need a time machine. Ah yes, you will all also say the same; exactly, we all need a time machine. I want to go back into the previous century, and view all these movies that create so much mystery and intrigue. Every film that I am not able to find anything about, makes me want to invent a time machine, and fly back into the past and watch the films, and then come back and write a more informed article about it.

Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 35

“शम्मा बुझने को चली

Of the many colors of Rafi Sb’s voice, probably the most touching, and the most impressive is his interpretation of the emotions of sadness. Maybe, it be so that the “. . . sweetest songs are the ones that tell of the saddest thoughts” (from the poetry of Percy Shelley, that inspired the iconic song of ‘Patita’ (1953) – “Hain Sab Se Madhur Wo Geet Jinhen Hum Dard Ke Sur Mein Gaate Hain”). And maybe, that the genuineness and honesty of expressions that go together with the unfeigned and substantive voice of Rafi Sb, it simply makes us feel the true depth of this ‘sweetness’ – a sweetness that touches a very familiar, a very dear chord within.
