A few weeks back while going through Deepti Naval’s filmography on her Website, I found the mention of one of her films, ‘Anant’. I have never heard of this film. I did not find the mention of this film on any regular film/song-based websites, like IMDb, myswar.in etc. Fortunately, a video clip of the film was available on one of the video sharing platforms which was uploaded by the producer of the film. I watched the film in one sitting and liked it immensely.
Anant (1999) was a tele film which was produced by Project Smita Society and Voluntary Health Association of India and was directed by Raman Kumar. The cast included Deepti Naval, Kanwaljeet Singh, Seema Biswas, Satyadev Dube, Bhakti, Javed Khan, Nanda and Avtar Gill. The story of the film was written by Alok Mukhopadhyay mainly to create an awareness about AIDS/HIV+ . Vinta Nanda wrote the screenplay and dialogues. The film was premiered on Star TV on December 1, 1999, on World Aids Day. Later, it was dubbed in nine languages for being telecast on the regional TV channels. The film was produced in mainstream cinema format with the focus on creating the awareness of AIDs for the people at large. The film is of 70 minutes’ duration.

‘Aurat Pair Kee Jootee Naheen Hai’ (1985) was produced by B K Adarsh and was directed by Prithviraj Chatterjee. The cast included Marc Zuber, Deepti Naval, Gulshan Grover, Sachin, Satyen Kappu, Anjali Sen, Goga Kapoor, Jagdeep, Brahm Bhardwaj, Shivraj, Dulari, Vikas Anand etc.
The VCD of the film is available on one of the video sharing platforms but with a poor quality of video. It is obvious from the title of the film that it is a feminist film. Before watching the film, I read the synopsis of the story which gave me an impression of tackling the feminist subject in an amateurish way. But a ghazal in the film forced me to watch the film. I am happy that despite a poor quality of video, I have watched the film in one sitting and felt satisfied the way the theme was handled in a matured way without the additional doses of songs and sub-plots. The story of the film was written by B K Adarsh and probably it was his first film (out of about 15 films he produced) which tackled an important social issue. Unfortunately, the film failed badly at the box office.

‘Shrimaan Shrimati’ (1982) was produced by B Nagi Reddy under the banner of Vijaya Productions and was directed by Vijaya Reddy. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Rakhee, Rakesh Roshan, Deepti Naval, Amol Palekar, Sarika, Dheeraj Kumar, Lalita Pawar, A K Hangal, Paintal, Naaz, Leela Mishra, Dinesh Hingoo etc with special appearances by Dr. Shreeram Lagoo and Ramesh Deo. The film was a remake of the Telugu film, ‘Tayaramma Bangarayya’ (1979) which was also remade in Tamil as ‘Sathya Sundharam’ (1981). This was B Nagi Reddy’s last Hindi film as a producer. It is interesting to note from his filmography as producer that his last four Hindi films had Sanjeev Kumar in the lead role with music director, Rajesh Roshan.

Hullo Atuldom
Here is a song from the 1979 release “Ek Baar Phir” that was written, produced and directed by Vinod Pande. It had music by Raghunath Seth and lyrics were by Vinod Pande himself. It had four or five songs of which the blog has this song.

Ah so, another station that we reach. Not especially for the blog, but a pervasive tradition. Ringing out an old temporal symbol, and ringing in a new one. On the astronomical scale, this celebration does not mean anything specific. Like any other measure of time, like any other day closing and like any other day initiating. But for the human spirit – it seeks celebration, in whatever. An arbitrary spike in the ground and one can endlessly argue that this very point is the center of the earth. Ah well, how does it matter. Let us celebrate.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 8

The previous post in this series was delayed by about a week or so. And today’s post, I have been saving this medley song to write about this person, but not sure about which date to bring it on. A chance reminder three days ago, brought up this song and this post, almost immediately. But then, other priorities intervened as usual, and this post is late by three days. 🙂
The person I write about, in this post, is Ravi Baswani. Yes, the sidekick companion of Naseeruddin Shah in the cult classic ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ of the year 1983. Coincidental that the posts for these two friends are coming up one after the other. And both are in the same series, and both posts are a medley of songs from the earlier years. One difference is the nature and the composition of the medley of songs – I will come to this point again a little later in the write up. And the second difference – for Naseer we celebrated a birthday anniversary, but for Ravi, the occasion is his remembrance day. Yes – 27th July in the year 2010, he suffered a massive cardiac arrest, quite unexpectedly, and was no more. He was in Haldwani, on the way back to Delhi from Nainital, where he had gone for location scouting for his first full length feature film, as a director. In the prime of his health, and on the top with his career in cinema and theatre – leaves a regret in the mind, that it was not a time to go.
