Today’s song is from the film Mehndi-1958.

In the year 1899, a famous writer of those times-Mirza Hadi ‘Ruswa’ wrote a novel “Umrao Jaan Ada” on the life and times of a famous Tawaif and poet of Lucknow. There is a dispute whether it was a real or a fictitious character. There have been arguments on both sides giving questionable bits of evidence. Whatever it was, the novel attracted attention of the public and the critics over the next few decades.

The famous Alfred Drama Company of the early 20th century, made it into a drama and it too became popular. During the silent era attempts were made to make it into a film on her, but it did not happen. However, after the advent of the Talkie films, many variations of this story came up and some films were made on it. But due to lack of information, we do not have the details.

In about mid-1940s, there was a demand for dancers in Hindi films following the success of dancers like Azurie and Cuckoo. The demand for dancers can be gauged from the fact that during 1945-50, Cuckoo worked in about 75 films of which she did as many as 34 films in 1950 alone. This ‘demand-supply’ mismatch for dancers led to the entry of new dancers in the Hindi film industry such as Mohana, Helen, Sheila Vaz, Roopmala, Kanchanmala, Kumkum etc during the late 40s and early 50s. One of the lesser known dancers who made a entry into this category during this period was Heera Sawant.

A poet’s dream and life’s illustration in reality, all anxieties and caution thrown to the winds and the desires to live the life the way it should be. These words from the pen of Shailendra, and numerous other such gems, of all moods and flavors, embellish the Hindi film screen for 160+ films across two decades. A poet par excellence, Shailendra was a rebel spirit meshed in a romantic mould, whose understanding and expression of human emotions and situations is second to none.
