Jaspinder Narula- a singer who is trained in Punjabi music, bhajans & Sufiana compositions initially stayed away from film singing. Under advice from Kalyanji (of the Kalyanji Anandji duo) she moved to Bombay (now Mumbai). Kalyanji’s son & music director Viju Shah, Anu Malik & Nadeem Shravan gave her, her first songs in ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’; ‘Virasat’ and ‘Judaai’ respectively. She has sung around 150-200 songs in Hindi films. She has a unique voice that has a ‘good throw’; in the same fashion as Usha Uthup or Shamshad Begum. I don’t know if I am able to express my thoughts, regarding the voice quality she has correctly, but hearing today’s song will, hopefully, help me put my point across.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990)
Today 27th June’2024 is the birth anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman. On this occasion we are paying our tributes to him by posting some of the songs composed by him.
For the last few years I have been regularly listening to songs composed by R.D. Burman on radio or on playlist recorded in a pen-drive. It is always a pleasure to listen to the songs composed by Pancham as many RD Burman songs composed by him are my favourites. Listening to his well known songs as well as songs that I was not aware of is a new experience now. I during my growing up years may not have been able to discern the nuances of his music, including music created through unconventional ‘instruments’.

‘Paapa Kahte Hain’ (1996) was produced by Plus Films (of Mahesh Bhatt and Amit Khanna) and was directed by Mahesh Bhatt. The cast included Jugal Hansraj, Mayuri Kango, Anupam Kher, Tiku Talsania, Navni Parihar, Alok Nath, Reema Lagoo, Suhas Joshi, Soni Razdan, Javed Khan, Dinesh Hingoo, Abhimanyu Singh, Sujata Kango, Johny Bakshi etc. The film was planned as a tele-film. However, when the main cast was finalised, it was decided to make it a feature film with Jugal Hansraj and Mayuri Kango in the lead roles. After the box office success of the Tamil film, ‘Thevar Magan’ (1992), written and produced by Kamal Hasan with Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Hasan, Revathi, Gautami and Nasser in the main roles, Kamal Hasan decided its remake in Hindi with himself in the lead role and Dilip Kumar in Sivaji Ganesan’s role. It was his intense desire to work with Dilip Kumar. However, Dilip Kumar declined to work in the film as he had almost retired from the films. So, Kamal Hasan kept the Hindi remake of the film in the backburner until he sold the film’s rights to his friend, Priyadarshan for its remake in Hindi as ‘Viraasat’ (1997).(Source: Hindustan Times, May 29, 2022).

Happy birthday to actor-writer-director, Honey Irani who completes 74 years today (17 January 2024). She shares her birth date with her ex-husband, Javed Akhtar who turns 79 today.
Honey Irani is the daughter of Noshir Irani who was one of the partners of Mumbai’s famous Irani Bakery and restaurant, B Merwan & Co. located opposite Grant Road railway station. (I used to visit this place almost every Saturdays to buy their famous maawa cake). Her mother, Perin Irani was fond of Hindi films and was firm that her children should work in films.

In the last 2 decades, I have preferred watching films that interest me on video sharing platforms or on OTT. ‘Talaash’ (2012) was one of few films I have watched in a multiplex upon its release after reading the ‘very good’ reviews of the film. And I was not disappointed. The film was a slow gainer on the box office front. Eventually, the film became a ‘semi hit’. Recently, I watched the film on OTT platform to recapitulate its story which I now feel is a complex one.

‘Mr Yogi’ (1989), directed by Ketan Mehta was one of a few Doordarshan Serials which I had watched its all the 13 episodes when it was telecast. The very first episode set the tone of the serial to be a light comedy and satirical one. It is a story about an NRI from USA, (played by the late Mohan Gokhale) who has come to India to choose a bride for himself. In his quest, he meets 12 girls of 12 different zodiac signs which results in some comical situations. There were a couple of medleys of popular Hindi film songs of 1960s and 70s in this TV serial. In the end, he rejects all the 12 girls but gets hooked to an unknown girl (Subhangi Gokhale, who became Mohan Gokhale’s real wife). The serial was based on a Gujarati novel, ‘Kimball Ravenswood’, written by an American Gujarati, Madhu Rye (real name: Madhusudan Vallabhdas Thaker).
