Last night, on our way back home after attending a marriage reception, I heard a song ‘simti huyi ye ghadiyaan’ in a FM Radio channel in our car. I had heard this song a few years back but I was not able to recall the name of the film, lyricist and music director except that I could recognise the voices of Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi. After getting nowhere to seek the answer, I asked my sister who was travelling with me and who has a good knowledge about old Hindi film songs, whether she knew about the song. Initially, she thought that I was testing her knowledge on the old Hindi film songs. It was only when I said in all seriousness that I did not know anything about this song other than the singers that she started applying her mind on my question.

Ramesh Saigal who had produced and directed socially relevant films like ‘Shikast (1952) and ‘Railway Platform (1956), ventured in to make one more such film based on the Russian novelist Dostoevsky’s ‘Crime and Punishment’. The film was PHIR SUBAH HOGI (1958). Raj Kapoor and Mala Sinha were the lead actors in this movie with Rehman, Jagdish Sethi, Leela Chitnis, Nana Pansikar and Mubarak in the supporting roles. The songs were written by Sahir Ludhianvi and composed by Khayyam. As far as I know, Sahir Ludhianvi teamed up with Khayyam for the first time in this film.

Maybe the friends on this blog have given up on me, if my inconsistency of the past few days, some weeks is any evidence. Well yes, the things are kind of busy in life at this time (now why should that be an excuse?) :). Nonetheless, today I do want to write about a wonderful song I came across for the first time last week, and also write about where I am and of the interesting things that have happened today.

During my earlier stage of baptism to Hindi film songs of the golden era, whenever I came across some new songs I liked, I would want to know the name of the film, singers and themusic directors ( in that order) of the concerned songs. I never enquired about who wrote these likeable songs. One song that made me to know the name of the lyricist was “main zindagi ka saath nibhaata chala gaya” from HUM DONO(1961). This song virtually introduced me to a great Urdu poet and lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi. I feel shy to reveal here that though I liked those iconic songs of PYAASA (1957) but that did not trigger my brain to enquire as to who wrote those melancholic and the soul searching songs. As I came to know later, those songs were written by Sahir Ludhianvi.

‘Hum hain raahi pyaar ke’ – the phrase reminds me of an iconic song “ham hain raah pyaar ke ham se kuchh naa boliye” from the film NAU DO GYAARAH (1957) and the Amir Khan-Juhi Chawala starrer film HUM HAIN RAAHI PYAAR KE (1993). I was not aware of the fact that there was one more film by the same name until I came across an audio clip of a beautiful song from that film.

Today, after quite some time, I have found the opportunity to wake up early morning and try and post a few songs for the day. The catch is, I have only about an hour or so at my disposal, in which I will try to post at least three songs for the day.

I was not sure how many songs I will be able to discuss today since I am undertaking a long 20 hours journey by train and going by my past experience, I know that internet connectivity is a problem during that time. But I am pleasantly surprised to fingd that the internet has held up for nearly an hour. It helps that the train is passing through an area which is a metropilital city and as such good connectivity is assured as long as the train remains in this area (which means for another 10 minutes). So I may as well make the most of it.
