Kishore Kumar has sung some wonderful songs for leading heroes viz. Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan. Though Vinod Khanna never achieved the same stature as the earlier mentioned stars, Vinod Khanna too was in contention for the top spot for much of 1970s before he threw it all away for Rajneesh.

When the makers of this movie made this movie, no one was left in any doubt that the movie was based on Mrs Indira Gandhi’s life, with Suchitra Sen playing her role. And very imaginatively, they called his movie “Andhi”, removing the first letter “G” from “Gandhi”. The movie was released during emergency, and to this day, I am amazed at the risk that the makers of this movie took. Another movie, “Kissa Kursi ka” which mocked Indira Gandhi and her son, did not meet with the same kind fate with the censors at that time.

There are actors who are known for playing happy go lucky roles and there are actresses who are known for playing melancholic roles. How to make these actresses play cheerful roles ? simple, make them act in the same movies in which the cheerful happy go lucky actor is also acting.

Bach gaye ham dono

This song is from “Chacha Zindabad” (1959). One may think it is O P Nayyar’s music, but it turns out to be Madan Mohan’s music. And for a change, this song is quite a light hearted comedy song. Certainly not something with which Madan Mohan is associated now a days.

The movie “Call Girl”‘ (1974) is all but forgotten now, and even the music directors Sapan Jagmohan failed to make it big, but one song from this movie “ulfat me zamaane ki har rasm ko thukraao” became reasonably popular.

Just a few days back, I had commented that Bollywood movie songs containing the word “Chaand” which were quite frequent till 1960 had become conspicuous by their absence in the later decades.

During 1970s, when I would try to tune radio Ceylon on wednesday night between 8 PM to 9 PM, tuning to the desired station was not as easy as it is for TV stations. There were so many radio stations on the same 25 metre band and getting a clear reception of Radio Ceylon, while avoiding voices of Voice of America, BBC etc was quite an art.

Bollywood movies of 1970s typically had a “disguise” song where the hero or heroine would enter the heavy security villain’s den in disguise. Their disguise would always be as the lead dancer (s) of the music troupe that was supposed to entertain the guests of the villain.

“Paraya Dhan” was a 1971 movie which had Rakesh Roshan and Hema Malini in lead roles.The movie is hardly remembered today, but R D Burman, who was on top those days, came up with great songs in this movie.
