‘Chandamama’ was a children’s monthly magazine known for its illustrations, long running mythological and magical stories. I was a huge fan of it & used to be gifted with a copy of it, as reward, for good showing in curricular & co-curricular activities. I had a collection of those books along with a few editions of Champak, Phantom, Mandrake, Tarzan & Amar Chitra Katha, like most children of those times.

There are some dates/ months that give working people (at least some of them) nightmares. One such date/ month is the month of July, especially the end of July, when one has to file one’s income tax returns. In India everyone claims to be an income tax payer, but the reality is that only 2% people actually pay income tax in India. Another 4% people file income tax returns but they do not pay income tax (they show zero tax liability in their IT returns). But when Union budget is announced, it is the remaining 94 % people who do not pay any income tax and who rather enjoy government subsidies who make the most hue and cry that their income tax burden had increased. 🙂

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Remembrance Day – Sanjeev Kumar)
————————————-

Today 6th November’2024 is the fortieth ‘Remembrance Day’ of the legendary actor Sanjeev Kumar (09.07.1938 – 06.11.1985). His movies are very much the part of my growing years. Movie watching people like me who were born in the end-sixties or early seventies cannot forget Sanjeev Kumar and his films. He was one of those rare actors whom everybody was a fan of. In our cricket playing group where we had juniors, seniors as well as classmates, whenever we used to discuss Hindi movies the movies of Sanjeev Kumar and his performance was always fondly discussed. He was also one of those actors whom we liked to giving stellar acting performances that left the audiences mesmerizing.

The song in this post is from the ‘1973’ movie ‘Double Cross’. I had mentioned it in my earlier post with a song from this movie, that I have memories of watching this movie somewhere in 1975-1976 at a small town Malkapur (on the Akola-Bhusawal rail route) in Maharashtra. The song ‘main jhonkaa mast hawaa kaa’ that I presented from this movie, was the only thing that I am able to associate with this movie. I had no recollections about the story of this movie and other songs till I became associated with this blog in 2012.

While going through the filmography of the music director, Vanraj Bhatia recently, I found that he had done the music composition mostly for the off-beat or ‘middle of the road’ films, including those of Shyam Benegal’s films. Among his Bollywood masala films which are few, ‘Surkhiyaan’ (1985) was one of them which came as surprise to me because a couple of songs from the film which I had heard long back, sounded to me like that of R D Burman. The title of the film gave the hint that the story may have something to do with print media. With Naseeruddin Shah as a lead actor, I thought that the script of the film would be good for him to agree to work in the film. I watched the film a couple of days back on this assumption.
