Today’s song is from the film Pyar ki Manzil-1950.
The sudden and unexpected death of Saigal, followed by India’s partition had disturbed the entire film industry. The major centres – Calcutta and Bombay – both had benefited with the songs of Saigal. A large number of Muslim community, working in different departments of filmmaking, had migrated to Pakistan, disturbing the set up. Luckily, India had a very capable second line of talented artistes waiting in the wings. Donon ke dil hain majboor ‘finance’ se … film hi release naa ho to ham kya karein. 😊
Today’s song is a lovely duet song penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. But the irony of this song is that it never came on the screen despite being recorded (and shot*) for not one but two different movies. However, in its second edition the male singer was different and credit for music direction was also given to only one of the composers and not to the ‘duo’ of composers as was the case in the older movie.

Geetanjali Pictures of Hemant Kumar had tasted success in the genre of suspense/mystery thriller in ‘Bees Saal Baad’ (1962) and ‘Kohra’ (1964). The banner had also produced ‘Faraar’ (1965), ‘Bibi Aur Makaan’ (1966) and ‘Khamoshi’ (1970) without much success at the box office. After a decade of the box office success of ‘Bees Saal Baad’ (1962), Hemant Kumar tried to repeat the success formula in ‘Bees Saal Pahele’ (1972). He introduced his son, Ritesh Mukherjee (real name: Jayanta Mukherjee, husband of Moushumi Chatterjee) in the lead role.
